Wemding, Munich, Düsseldorf The matter seemed clear. US tech companies such as Waymo, Cruise and Zoox led the development of automated driving, and the traditional auto industry was left behind. While Volkswagen, Daimler and BMW were using well-known lane departure warning systems or distance cruise control, Waymo was already experimenting with robotic taxis on public roads in the USA. For industry observers, it was clear: The big money with autonomous driving will be made by the tech companies, the domestic vehicle manufacturers and suppliers are left behind.
But the tide is turning. The software giants who have been pumping billions into development for years are reaching their technological limits. Fully autonomous driving cannot be developed as quickly as originally thought. So-called robotaxis do not yet work on a broad scale.
