Spanish electric utility Iberdrola will lead a project to develop a “Mediterranean Corridor” for electric heavy-duty trucks, in collaboration with transport and logistics company Disfrimur and electronics specialist Ingeteam.
The project will include the procurement of heavy-duty EVs (up to 40 tons), the development of fast charging infrastructure at Disfrimur logistics centers (which will also be open to the public), and the deployment of a smart grid to ensure maximum efficiency.
The Mediterranean Corridor will run through the Regions of Murcia and Valencia, and the company hopes to someday extend it to “all other national freight corridors” in Spain.
Ingeteam will supply EVSE hardware capable of delivering up to 1 MW of power. Iberdrola says the development of its chargers will follow the future Megawatt Charging System (MCS) standard for fast charging of heavy-duty EVs. This will enable a charging voltage of up to 1,500 V, and current levels of over 1,000 A.
Iberdrola plans to invest 150 million euros over the next five years to install some 150,000 charging points at residential, commercial and highway sites, primarily in Spain. The group says it has signed more than 50 agreements on infrastructure development with EV OEMs, including Porsche, Volkswagen and Mercedes, as well as other organizations. The company is also involved in plans for a battery cell factory in Spain.
