Jaguar Land Rover has partnered with portable-generator specialist Pramac to develop an energy storage unit powered by second-life Jaguar I-Pace batteries.
The Off Grid Energy Storage System uses cells from one-and-a-half I-Pace battery packs to provide a mobile source of power in locations where grid electricity may not be available—such as a Formula E paddock.
The unit helped the Jaguar TCS Racing team prepare for the 2022 Formula E World Championship during testing in the UK and Spain, where it was used to run the team’s diagnostic equipment and to supply auxiliary power to the pit garage. The system is charged by solar panels, stores up to 125 kWh of energy, and provides AC charging at a power level of 22 kW.
“Formula E is the world’s first net carbon zero sport since inception,” says Team Principal James Barclay. “Jaguar TCS Racing is always looking at improving our carbon footprint, and using the Off Grid Energy Storage System provides us with an innovative renewable energy solution for testing. To use second-life Jaguar I-Pace batteries completes this sustainable circle.”
