Carmaker Volkswagen announced that it would launch a Level 4 vehicle by 2026.
The CEO of Volkswagen, Herbert Diess, has an autonomous vehicle on level 4 announced. The vehicle should be on the market by 2026. This is apparently related to a new partner: Qualcomm. VW will source its hardware from the company.
Whether the vehicle will be designed as a robot taxi or for private use is just as unclear as the question of the pedals and the steering wheel. However, as Diess made it clear, sufficient computing power is needed on the chip. Is this chip now from Qualcomm? Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Ride platform will also be used at VW.
Another component of the goal is the in-house software company CARIAD, which supplies the code lines for Level 4. They currently only provide about 10 percent of the source code, but this should be increased to 60 percent by 2025. But it is also an important partner Microsoft, with which the cloud business has already been created.
There is speculation as to whether VW is primarily focusing on cameras with regard to sensors lidar sets, which reduces costs. Tesla For cost reasons, it does not want to use any lidar sensors at all.
These come from Mobileye and the cooperation with the company wants to be maintained, but this should only apply to vehicles that reach level 2.
