The engine with six pistons in front of the Mahle headquarters is meters high. If you drive into Stuttgart from the west via the Pragsattel, the sculpture will inevitably catch your eye. It is the symbol of Germany’s fourth largest automotive supplier.
For decades, engine parts from Bad Cannstatt were an integral part of the inner workings of German automobiles with combustion engines. The pistons for Michael Schumacher’s world champion Ferrari from 2003? They come from Mahle “and a few more nice things,” the chairman of the supervisory board, Heinz K. Junker, once confided to the Handelsblatt in one of his rare interviews.
German workmanship in Italy’s world champion sports car – that was the technological zenith of the Stuttgart piston specialist co-founded 102 years ago by the Mahle brothers. Just didn’t know it back then.
