The second largest automaker in Europe behind Volkswagen, Stellantis, announced on Monday evening that it would leave the European automobile manufacturers association Acea by the end of 2022. The reason for this is to take a new approach to “addressing the problems and challenges of future mobility”, including a departure from traditional lobbying, as the company says in a public statement. The exit should be completed by the end of this year.

The automaker in its statement that it had created the so-called “Freedom of Mobility Forum” instead. This should offer a more direct, public space for various actors in the context of the topic “to share and confront their thoughts on a 360-degree and fact-based approach”. An expert advisory board from various interest groups in the automotive industry is to plan and coordinate the forum, including politicians, scientists, technology providers and academics.

That should be even earlier for some brands of the group, such as Opel are valid. The group aims to be completely CO2-neutral by 2038. The group allegedly wants to do this without sacrificing profit. Annual sales should double to 300 billion euros by 2030 with a stable operating return of more than ten percent.

Stellantis could overtake VW

With the new targets, Stellantis could also overtake the Volkswagen group. The brand from Wolfsburg currently wants to sell 70 percent of new cars in Europe as pure electric cars by the end of the decade, and the entire group is aiming for a sales share of 50 percent worldwide.

The parent company of Opel emerged at the beginning of 2021 from the merger of peugeot-Citroën with Fiat Chrysler. CEO Carlos Tavares (63) now wants to help the company to make a big change.

According to its own statements, Stellantis is currently building a battery plant in the South Korean company Samsung SDI United States. The plant in Kokomo, Indiana, is scheduled to start operations in 2025 and cost 2.5 billion US dollars (about 2.25 million euros) and create 1,400 new jobs.
