Mahindra evaluating Flint as new plant location

Mahindra evaluating Flint as new plant location

Auburn Hills, Michigan, August 8, 2019: Mahindra Automotive North America (MANA) has signed a Letter of Intent with RACER Trust to evaluate the former Buick City site for a new manufacturing plant in Flint, Michigan. Mahindra’s current manufacturing facility in Auburn Hills, Michigan is at capacity, and a significant facility expansion is envisioned to support manufacturing and assembly of new products for the US market.

The plant would include production of mail delivery trucks should Mahindra be awarded the USPS’s Next Generation Delivery Vehicle contract. Mahindra is one of five companies short-listed for the contract award, which is expected to be announced later this year. The plant would also house production for a number of future products that have not been announced publicly. It is projected the plant will create up to 2,000 jobs over the first five years with additional jobs to follow.

Mahindra also is in discussion with several other states that have suitable sites. The decision about where to make this substantial investment will be driven in part by the financial incentives that are available from the State of Michigan. “Winning the USPS contract is a key element of our growth strategy but it's only a piece of what we have planned,” said Rick Haas, President and CEO of Mahindra Automotive North America. “We have a long-term product plan and we believe the former Buick City site in Flint is a strong contender for what would essentially be Mahindra’s first large scale manufacturing operation in the United States.”

MANA launched the ROXOR off-road work and recreational vehicle in 2018 in its Auburn Hills facility, which also serves as its North American corporate headquarters. The engineering team at MANA is leading the development of Mahindra’s next generation global vehicle platform.

“While we're keeping our options open, we think the former Buick City site in Flint would be a great fit for us,” said Haas. “It's close to our current facility, which improves overall enterprise efficiency, and the site is one of the oldest manufacturing sites in the United States with a long, storied automotive history. We look forward to working with RACER Trust, the City of Flint and the State of Michigan to fully determine whether this site represents our best opportunity to build Mahindra's automotive future here in North America.”

MANA will continue to operate its current HQ and technical center in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Agents of change 'Shine Bright'

At the launch of author Rashmi Bansal's tenth book, Shine Bright, (L-R) Kirti Poonia, Head at Okhai, Vineet Gautam, CEO, Bestseller India, Dr Pawan Goenka, MD, M&M, Harsh Kumar Bhanwala, Chairman, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), and R Mukundan, MD and CEO, Tata Chemicals.

Is being an entrepreneur the only way to bring about an impact? What if you could do things that entrepreneurs do, but within the structure of an organization? Shine Bright, the latest book by best-selling author Rashmi Bansal chronicles inspiring stories from CEOs, including Dr Pawan Goenka, MD, M&M. The book takes us on a ride, up close and personal which is equal parts arduous and fulfilling. Tracing his tryst with destiny that began in a small village on the outskirts of MP and took him to Kolkata, Kanpur, and then the US, Dr Goenka speaks from the heart in 'Shine Bright', and drives home the fact that if one is not stuck' to the job, they too can be an agent of change.

Sharing anecdotes from his job interview with Anand Mahindra back in 1992, Dr Goenka, said, 'Looking at my resume at that time nobody would have considered me fit for the job that I was hired for because I knew all about a job that nobody cared about. Whereas in this job I had to do something much broader than what I had ever done in my life. Anand Mahindra only said – If you believe in the dream, and if it challenges you come and join the team. There was no discussion about the role, the designation or to whom I would report. Anand’s vision for R&D clinched the deal and I signed on the dotted line.'

Under Pawan Goenka's able leadership, Mahindra Auto now competes with global giants – and outperforms them. From taking charge of the R&D facility in Nashik to developing the iconic Scorpio from scratch, the professional struggle, personal turmoil and resilience through the years, shaped Dr Goenka into an ‘intrapreneur'.

Budgeting for Growth

Newsroom/Stories/Budgeting for Growth

Budgeting for Growth

6 July 2019: From enhancing the ease of doing business, to creating a conducive environment for new-age companies, with a focus on rural growth and infrastructure creation the new Union Budget for 2019-20 ticks several boxes.

Here is a quick recap of the highlights and an analysis from the desk of the Group Chief Economist –

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, presented a 'mega investment-oriented' budget with a blueprint to transform India's economy by 2025. This will be achieved by setting up a Credit Guarantee Enhancement Corporation, enhancing the source of capital or infrastructure financing and easing the norms for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group, said, “Instead of lowering Goods and Services Tax (GST) on all cars, Nirmala Sitaraman aligned with the vision for mobility & incentivized only Evs. In fact, the budget is an accumulation of seemingly unspectacular moves that will nudge the economy onto a trajectory toward USD 5 trillion & an improved ‘ease of living.”

V. S. Parthasarathy, Mahindra Group CFO, said, “Budget 2019 has re-imagined solutions to old chronic problems. This was a 'Governance' focused Budget pivoting around technology, digital and enhancing the ease of doing business in India. It can prove to be a powerful catalyst for economic prosperity if the implementation is flawless and executed in near ‘crisis mode'.

Enhancing the ease of direct and indirect taxation the government has increased the threshold turnover for a lower rate of corporate tax. Currently, the lower tax rate of 25% is only applicable to companies having an annual turnover of up to Rs 250 crore. This has now been expanded to include all companies with an annual turnover of up to Rs 400 crore.

Aadhar card and PAN will be interchangeable and a scheme of faceless assessment in electronic mode involving no human interface will also be launched this year.

In order to incentivize and give thrust to the Electric Vehicles (EVs) sector, customs duty on specified parts required for the manufacture of EVs has been brought down to nil. In addition, there is already a proposal before the GST Council to reduce the GST on e-vehicles from the present 12% to 5%

The Budget also focusses on transforming rural lives by setting up 100 new clusters for traditional industries, 80 Livelihood Business Incubators to develop agro-rural industry sectors, the formation of 10,000 new Farmer Producer Organizations to ensure economies of scale, and expansion of Swachh Bharat Mission to reach every village in India.

Mahindra's Group Chief Economist desk reviewed the Budget saying, “The Budget eschewed the temptation of a big spending splurge because it lacked the room to do so. The government has imparted an Infra thrust by significantly focussing on national grids for water, power, gas, internet, and aviation apart from transportation. Financing the fiscal deficit from abroad, however, can be a double-edged sword especially for countries running twin deficits.

V. Ravi, Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer, Mahindra Finance, said, “The positive reference made by the Finance Minister about NBFCs as an important growth lever by contributing to improved consumption and capital formation, will go a long way in reinvigorating the SME sector. The NBFC industry would have been glad to see the formation of a refinancing body which would address the liquidity stress created by certain entity-specific events that tend to affect the sector as a whole.”

There is a sense of urgency in India: Anand Mahindra

There is a sense of urgency in India: Anand Mahindra

“There is a sense of urgency in India, which I think is going to spur action and innovation. It's about staying alive,” says, Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group.

Our Planet, a ground-breaking Netflix documentary series that reached 25 million homes around the world within the first month of its launch, beautifully showcased the wonder and variety of life on earth. With an important conservation message at its heart, the film revealed why biodiversity is so important to the health of the planet.

People around the world are lending their support and amplifying the movement to conserve biodiversity. In the sequel to the series – 'Our Planet: Our Business', Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group joins scientists, NGOs and global businesses to represents India, and share the Group's actions and insights to save the planet. The Mahindra Group believes that value addition in the future will depend on the conservation of natural resources through more effective manufacturing processes and the re-use of materials – essentially doing more with less.

Through the natural resource utilization strategy that is governed by the 3Cs – Conservation, Continuous improvement towards rejuvenation, and Comprehensive disclosures. A cohesive framework, well-structured processes, and focused interventions are the foundation of the Mahindra Group’s resource management approach.

Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group, said, “There is a sense of urgency in India, which I think is going to spur action and innovation. It’s about staying alive. I commit it on behalf of my 2,25,000 colleagues that by the year 2040 all Mahindra Group companies will be carbon neutral. I think in the future when we look back there will be two types of companies – companies that got it, and companies that didn’t get it. I know which segment I would like to belong to.”

In the last 50 years, there has been an exponential rise in the unsustainable exploitation of natural resources. To continue reaping the benefits of our natural environment, businesses need to recognize the importance of natural resources and lead the change on an industrial scale, and at unparalleled speed.

For Q1 F2020, the Indian auto industry de-grew 12.3%, with all segments of the industry reporting a decline. It is after six years, that all segments of the industry have posted a reduction in the same quarter. The auto industry excluding 2W fell 15.4% driven by drop of 18.4% in the Passenger Vehicle (PV) industry and the MHCV goods industry falling by 18.6%.

For the PV segment, Q1 F2020 is the fourth consecutive quarter of reduction, the worst ever de-growth since Q3 F2001. PV demand continues to be impacted by the slowing down of the overall economy, which along with tight credit conditions and delayed monsoon has impacted consumer sentiment in both urban and rural India. The stress in the agri sector and finance availability has impacted the demand for LCV 2-3.5T (Pik-UP segment). The HCV goods segment has posted a de-growth of 32.0%, the worst reduction in 23 quarters. The slowing down of economic activity coupled with the increase in freight capacity of existing fleet due to implementation of new axle loading norms has resulted in many transporters either reducing or temporarily suspending their fleet purchase plans.

Tractor demand in Q1 F2020 remained sluggish and was adversely impacted due to a weak sentiment in the agri economy resulting from the delay in SW monsoon, poor spatial distribution in June and weak agricultural incomes impacted by poor price realization. In Q1 F2020, the domestic tractor industry declined by 14.6% with sales of 1,91,305 tractors, against 2,23,937 tractors sold during Q1 F2019. In this period, in the domestic market, the Company sold 82,013 with a market share of 42.9%.

Outlook:

The IMF has pared down its projections yet again for global as well India’s growth in its latest July 2019 outlook. Domestically, data broadly paints a picture of subdued demand, notably in private consumption with firms and households continuing to hold back spending. The RBI has also scaled down the projection of GDP growth for 2019-20 to 7.0% from 7.2% earlier.

Monsoon, which is crucial for farm output and growth, has played catch up lately, thanks to copious July rainfall, after a delayed and patchy start. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a zero-deficit monsoon in the second half of season, which bodes well for cumulative rainfall as well as Kharif acreage. The resultant precipitation and soil moisture could also turn out to be positive for Rabi crops.

The RBI has cut policy rates by 75bps thus far and is likely to remain accommodative. The lagged effect of interest rate cuts, liquidity infusion and targeted fiscal spending post budget, especially government actions on improving incomes for farmers, cash transfers and sops for affordable housing, could provide support to growth going forward. However, given the current challenging global and domestic growth environment, a concerted policy effort will be required to prop sentiment, put a floor under consumption and revive growth.

Note: Translation of rupee to dollar is a convenience translation at the average exchange rate for the twelve month period ended 30th June 2019.

Sustainability wins for Igatpuri plant

15 July 2019: Mahindra's Igatpuri plant won the 'Sustainable Factory of the Year Award' and 'Jury award for Zero Waste to Landfill' at the recently concluded India Sustainability Leadership Summit 2019 in Mumbai. The summit jointly organized by Frost & Sullivan and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) drew key thinkers and business leaders who have delivered and continue to deliver strategies, ideas and solutions for a sustainable business and are establishing a roadmap toward holistic development globally.

The Sustainability 4.0 Award recognizes and honors the efforts made by companies who actively integrate sustainability principles into their business culture. This year, the Sustainability 4.0 Award assessment model comprised four major parameters (People, Planet, Purpose, and Partnership) and 13 sub-parameters.

The Mahindra Group has adopted 'No Waste to Landfill' as a cornerstone of its Sustainability Framework. The team at Igatpuri has been the first off the blocks in this regard.

Actions taken by the plant include reprocessing grinding mud to recover metal, oil and carbon black, recovering energy by incineration of cotton waste, replacing wood and cardboard with returnable packaging, converting food waste to bio-energy and using treated canteen wastewater for gardening.

Vijay Kalra, Chief of Manufacturing Operation, M&M Ltd., said, “Sustainability 4.0 is a very comprehensive assessment framework which includes assessment in the areas of environment, social and economic performance of the organization. The assessment process was in-depth and we received a lot of insights as well as identify areas of improvement which will certainly help us progress to the next level of excellence.”

GENEVA – 20:30 CET, 04 MARCH 2019 A revolution in automotive performance, design and technical collaboration is revealed with the Pininfarina Battista, the world’s first luxury electric hyper performance GT. Delivering on a long-held Pininfarina family dream and a new target of zero emissions with extreme power, the Battista is the first solely Pininfarina-badged car and delivers unprecedented performance. tThe trio of beautiful Battista design models presented as part of the hypercar’s World Premiere in Geneva represent a new pinnacle of desirability for electric cars, stylishly resolving the paradox of beauty and performance in a pure, elegant and timeless Italian design.

When it arrives in 2020, the Battista will be the most powerful car ever designed and built in Italy and it will deliver a level of performance that is unachievable today in any road-legal sports car featuring internal combustion engine technology. Faster than a current Formula 1 race car in its 0 -100 km/h sub-two second sprint, and with 1,900 hp and 2,300 Nm torque on tap, the Battista will combine extreme engineering and technology in a zero emissions package.

The year 2020 is also the 90th anniversary of the legendary Pininfarina SpA design house, which has taken the design brief for the Battista and produced a classic Pininfarina: an elegant form that seamlessly integrates the car’s innovative engineering solutions to deliver unprecedented performance. It is the same design principle of form and function in harmony as seen in classic Pininfarina cars reaching back to the Cisitalia 202 of 1947 and through more than 100 Ferraris, the most recent of which was launched this decade.

The Pininfarina Battista's place in automotive history is defined by its name. It is the first in a range of purely electric, zero-emissions, luxury cars solely branded Pininfarina, delivering on a long-held family dream that has been carried by founder, Battista, his son Sergio, and his grandson, the current Pininfarina SpA Chairman, Paolo.

Never before has a new brand and its first car been launched with such an emotive past, relevance for the present, and potential for the future – the Battista embodies timeless design as a piece of art.

Automobili Pininfarina CEO, Michael Perschke: “This is the most authentic and exciting automotive story imaginable. The Battista is the hypercar of the future, inspired by a legendary past. It combines true inspiration and innovation in its technical achievement and emotional appeal. Electrification unlocks the door to a new level of performance and a zero-emissions future, whilst a passion and respect for automotive history will define how this landmark car looks and feels. We aim for the Battista to be a future classic and automotive icon, writing its own page in automotive history books.”

The ingredients for success reach further than statistics and history. A group of automotive experts, the like of which have never been assembled before for the launch of a new car company, are working for Automobili Pininfarina and partnering with Pininfarina SpA and an enviable list of technology specialists headed by the likes of Rimac and Pirelli. The result is that the Battista will arrive next year having been developed through the expertise and inspiration of a team that have been integral to the launches of cars such as the Bugatti Veyron and Chiron, Ferrari Sergio, Lamborghini Urus, McLaren P1, Mercedes AMG-Project One, Pagani Zonda and Porsche Mission E.

The resulting hypercar will appeal to the world's automotive connoisseurs from a technical and aesthetic standpoint, and also because of its rarity. No more than 150 Battistas will be hand-crafted in Italy and allocated equally between the regions of North America, Europe and Middle East/Asia. Exceptional customer service will be delivered through some of the world’s best luxury car retail specialists, from Los Angeles to London to Tokyo. Plans are in place for the opportunity to fully personalise each car at Pininfarina SpA's Cambiano headquarters.

THE PININFARINA BATTISTA: AN INTRODUCTION

The Battista seeks to break new ground in the history of automotive when it arrives in 2020. Named after Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina, who founded the Carrozzeria Pininfarina coachbuilding company in 1930, the all-electric hyper GT will be designed and hand-built in very limited numbers at Pininfarina SpA under the watchful eye of Paolo Pininfarina, Battista’s grandson and current Pininfarina SpA Chairman. The Battista, appropriately enough, will be the most powerful road-legal car ever designed and produced in Italy.

A carbon fibre monocoque chassis and visually stunning carbon fibre body provide the foundation and visual definition for the extreme levels of technology and functional, elegant driver-focused design solutions at the heart of the hypercar.

The result will be staggering performance for a road car: power and torque of 1,900 hp and 2,300 Nm, providing acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than two seconds (faster than a current Formula 1 car), 300 km/h in less than 12 seconds and the ability to achieve a top speed of up to 350 km/h. All with a potential zero-emissions range of up to 450 kilometres and an extreme focus on drivability.

The weight distribution of the T-shaped 120 kWh battery pack is configured to optimise the Battista’s dynamic potential, with four motors independently distributing torque and power to each wheel, delivering all the benefits of modern torque vectoring. Cooling circuits and systems are based around five radiators.

Whilst the car's electronic brain serves up a thrilling new experience in dynamic driving, its braking system offers the back-up to that performance. Massive, carbon-ceramic 6-piston brakes (390 mm at the front and 390 mm at the rear) provide fade-free deceleration and hugely effective brake regeneration to the battery will be engineered into the system. The active rear wing features an air brake function.

The Battista’s suspension is tuned specifically to deliver a thrilling, engaging and yet comfortable dynamic experience. The driver will be able to electronically adjust the dynamic experience through multiple modes tuned to a range of driving scenarios and will also be able to tailor the noise the 1,900 hp car makes – the Battista’s on-board sound programme will focus on using vehicle hardware to generate acoustic entertainment, rather than generate artificial sounds.

Inspired by, and paying homage to, famous Pininfarina designs such as the Cisitalia 202, Ferrari Dino Berlinetta Speciale, Ferrari Modulo, and Sintesi concept cars – each ahead of its time and instantly influential when presented – the Battista will feature classic Pininfarina design cues and a unique blend of beauty and technological innovation in perfect balance. Battista owners are guaranteed..
