Multimatic Fell Short On Production Target For 2017 Ford GT

18 Jul 2018, 15:33 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Industry

Introduced without anyone knowing that would hit them at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the second-generation Ford GT is not your usual supercar. In addition to the heritage, performance, and success in the World Endurance Championship, the GT also happens to be an exclusive breed.
9 photosThe first example rolled off the assembly line in Canada towards the end of 2016, and at the time, the Ford Motor Company confirmed that Multimatic Inc. would build 1,000 units over a period of four years. But as it happens, the automotive manufacturing and engineering outfit fell short on the production target for 2017.
After reaching out to Ford, our friends at Motor Authority found out that 138 examples (out of 250 planned) were built in 2017 by the automaker’s Canadian partner. “We built into our process an extended ramp-up due to several factors such as global homologation testing and supplier constraints,” explained a spokesman.
The problem that Multimatic faced with the first units of the GT was the rate of manufacture, “some supplier issues, and some minor delays in painting the special Victory cars.” To this effect, the 112 vehicles that should’ve been built in 2017 will be finished for the 2018 model year. On that note, can Multimatic pull it off?
“We’re sticking to our initial commitment of 1,000 vehicles,” further added the spokesman, explaining that Ford is committed to “building the vehicle for at least four years.” By using at least in his explanation, the official might’ve indicated that Ford will push back the end of production by a handful of months.
For people like you and me, this might not appear to be a problem. But for those who have placed an order or paid their cars in full without even getting a notice about the delay, the Ford Motor Company has some apologies to make.
On that note, is there anything left to squeeze out of the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6? In its most aggressive tune, the engine currently develops 647 horsepower (656 PS) and 550 pound-feet (746 Nm) of torque.

Tata Discontinues Nano City Car

15 Jul 2018, 16:52 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

11 photosOf the most unfathomable, uninteresting, unworthy, uncanny, and unforgettable cars to have made it into series production, the Nano is up there at the top with the very worst of them.
Introduced by Tata as a cheap means of personal transport in 2008, the Nano is no longer with us. Production came to a virtual stop in May over drying demand, and as of June 2018, Tata has stopped making the Nano altogether.
Automotive News reports that Tata produced one Nano in June, “down from 275 in the same month last year.” The confirmation of the Nano’s dismissal, however, comes from the export numbers. Which were zero, if you were actually wondering.
The Nano, which starts in India at the equivalent of $3,500, was interesting to the value-conscious buyer back in 2008. But things have changed since then. Even the European low-cost segment has seen changes since 2008, with Dacia upping its game with superior products and after-sales service.
In addition to the horrific exterior styling, the Nano is less comfortable than a ride on the bus and just as lacking in terms of safety. But most of all, it was the fault of Tata for thinking that the lowest price possible is what will make the Nano a commercial hit.
Tata even thought that it would be great to electrify the Nano, but that didn’t work out either. Automotive News puts it as follows: “India may not be ready for the pizazz of futuristic vehicles. But it's past the point of no-frills metal shells.” And that’s the thing with the Nano.
Instead of being the go-to car for those with budgets on a shoestring, it became a repugnant reminder that the people who are now part of the aspirational middle class were poorer and more limited in options in 2008.
The bottom line is, Tata ignored one of the most important aspects of a customer’s mindset by omitting a simple question. It doesn’t all boil down to “can I afford this car?” but “do I want this car?”
On the matter of wants versus needs, the most basic of economic laws teach us that a growing middle class favors wants over needs. And with that, Tata should take note for the future.

Alpine Increasing Production Of A110 Sports Car To 20 Vehicles Per Day

14 Jul 2018, 14:02 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Industry

If you thought it’s a long wait until Tesla delivers your ideal Model 3, stop moaning. Those who prefer the Alpine A110 over the Porsche 718 Cayman have to wait more than a year for their mid-engine sports car to arrive in the driveway, with the French automaker building the turbocharged two-seat coupe at a rate of 15 vehicles per day.
54 photosFailing to satisfy the customer with 54,700 euros in his pocket doesn’t sit well with Alpine, which knows that people are prone to cancel their orders and go for the Porsche. Given this circumstance, the performance sub-brand controlled by Renault announced that it’s upping production to 20 vehicles per day.
Automotive News highlights that the “order books don't officially open until September” at the automaker’s 49 dealer network in Europe, “but only those who reserved a long time ahead will take delivery of cars before the end of the year.”
The publication refers to the 1955 Premiere, a special edition that celebrates the launch of the A110 as well as the year Alpine was founded by Jean Redele. Fast-forward to 1969, and that’s the year Alpine opened the assembly plant in Dieppe where the A110 is manufactured nowadays.
Turning our focus back on the 1955 Premiere, the model sold out in just under five days according to Renault. The current lineup consists of the Pure (€54,700 in France) and Legende (€58,500). Both models churn out 252 horsepower and 320 Nm from the 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that happens to be more potent in the Megane RS hot hatchback.
Even though the plant in Dieppe can build up to 6,000 cars per year, increasing the speed of production to 20 per day would push production to 5,200 cars annually. But at the end of the day, there’s something more pressing that Alpine wants to address with the A110.
“Currently, our first priority is quality – and our second and third. Then we talk about quantity,” declared Sebastien Erphelin, interim managing director of Alpine. Considering that an A110 takes one-and-a-half weeks to build, Tesla’s problems with the Model 3 seem small by comparison.
On that note, what would you buy in this price range and in this segment? Are the Alfa Romeo 4C and Porsche 718 Cayman more attractive than the A110 of the 21st century?

Vauxhall Kills Off Cascada Convertible Over Disappointing Sales

13 Jul 2018, 12:20 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

16 photosWhen Opel took the veils off the Cascada towards the end of 2012, the compact-sized convertible with front-wheel drive was already old if you’re the kind of customer that cares about the underpinnings of your next car.
More to the point, the Cascada rides on the Delta II platform from 2008. At the same time, General Motors was putting the finishing touches on the D2XX/D2UX vehicle architecture.
Vauxhall, Buick, and Holden then added the Cascada to their lineups, and coming as a surprise to no one except for the higher-ups at General Motors, the soft-top roadster flopped from a commercial standpoint. All four brands are struggling to sell the model despite the fact it is available in every corner of the world, and to this effect, Vauxhall said that enough is enough. Alas, the Cascada had to killed off.
The British automaker (now owned by Groupe PSA) confirmed at the beginning of the year that something had to give, and that something is the Cascada. This is the fourth model from the Vauxhall lineup to be discontinued this year after the Zafira, Astra GTC, and Adam Rocks.
Nobody said it would be easy to transition from General Motors to the French automotive group, but nameplates that don’t bring money to Groupe PSA have to be phased out in order to strengthen profit overall. Autocar.co.uk highlights that 220 examples of the breed were sold in the United Kingdom in 2017.
During its first full year on sale, Vauxhall moved in the ballpark of 850 units of the Cascada. Opel, Buick, and Holden have posted similarly poor results for the Cascada, which might be an indicator Vauxhall won’t be the only one to take drastic measures. But at the same time, Audi and BMW can now rejoice with their A3 Convertible and 2 Series Convertible taking the reign of the segment.
Like Ford, Renault, and Peugeot before it, Vauxhall doesn’t plan to replace the Cascada with an all-new model. Parent company Groupe PSA is more focused on electrification and crossovers, which is to be expected based on how the market is shifting.
In addition to the Crossland X, Grandland X, and Mokka X, the Opel-Vauxhall twins will introduce a flagship utility vehicle by the end of the decade.

Volkswagen Discontinues Tiguan Limited Over Slow Sales

25 Jun 2018, 8:01 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

Now in its second generation, the Tiguan sold 38,314 examples of the all-new model from January through May. The first generation, now called Tiguan Limited and priced lower than the newcomer, managed to move 7,732 units in the same period. Given these circumstances, Volkswagen decided that something has to give.
6 photosKept on life support as the more affordable alternative in Volkswagen's lineup in the realm of compact-sized crossover utility vehicles, the Tiguan Limited was supposed to soldier on through the 2019 model year. But according to an e-mailed statement from spokesperson Mark Gillies, the nameplate will not return in 2019.
“The model will be discontinued at the end of the year,” reports Cars Direct, adding that the Tiguan Limited wasn’t meant to find commercial success from the first day it went on sale. The cited publication “found that despite the price difference, the new model was actually cheaper to lease than the carryover 2018 Tiguan Limited.”
Starting at $23,150 compared to the $25,495 of the second-generation Tiguan, the budget-priced version of the Tiguan is available with front- and all-wheel-drive. Both versions rely on a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 200 horsepower on tap, with the front-driven model returning up to 26 miles per gallon on the highway.
In addition to the list of standard equipment, Volkswagen’s Tiguan Limited is covered by “America’s best bumper-to-bumper limited warranty. Period.” More to the point, that breaks down to six years or 72,000 miles, whichever of the two comes first.
Even though nobody will miss the old Tiguan, the automaker was too slow to understand that the compact crossover segment is extremely different from how things stood five years ago. Adding insult to injury, VW isn’t the budget-oriented automaker it was when the Ferdinand Porsche-designed Beetle was in production.
The money that Volkswagen lost on the Tiguan Limited is but a drop in the sea for the Wolfsburg-based automaker, which has been hit only recently by a €1 billion fine from German prosecutors over the Dieselgate scandal. Elsewhere in the group, Audi isn’t enjoying the best of times now that chief executive officer Rupert Stadler has been arrested by the authorities and removed from his position on the supervisory board.

Chevrolet Increases Bolt Production By More Than 20 Percent

8 Jul 2018, 15:14 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Industry

Ever since it went on sale for the 2017 model year, the Bolt had a problem. No, it’s not that fast-charging is too expensive even for an optional extra or the lack of adaptive cruise control, but demand continues to outpace supply. In the wake of Tesla’s success with the Model 3, General Motors decided to reply with a production increase of “more than 20 percent” for the electric hatchback.
26 photosEven though the production ramp-up will take effect in the fourth quarter of the year, that’s great news considering what General Motors plan for the near- to mid-future. More to the point, the automaker will bring 20 electric vehicles to market by 2023, expecting demand for this means of propulsion to grow like crazy by then.
To date, the biggest demand for the Bolt came from the United States, Canada, and South Korea. Over in Europe, General Motors told Opel and Vauxhall dealers to stop selling the Ampera-e (badge-engineered version of the Bolt) as much as possible despite thousands of orders from EV-friendly markets such as Norway.
From January 2018 through the end of June, the Bolt racked up no less than 7,858 firm orders. That’s 3.5 percent more than the first half of 2017, and by comparison, the Leaf managed 6,659 sales around here for Nissan in the same period.
Manufactured in Lake Orion, Michigan since October 2016, the Bolt starts at $37,495. That translates to $29,995 if you include the federal tax credit, the subcompact-sized model is described by its maker as “the first affordable all-electric car to offer an EPA-estimated 238 miles of range on a single charge.”
The Model 3 with the Standard Battery (50 kWh instead of 60 kWh for the Bolt), by comparison, starts at $35,000 ($27,500 with the federal tax credit), is larger and roomier, but the added heft takes its toll on range. According to Tesla, the EPA-rated range for the entry-level drivetrain option of the Model 3 sits at 220 miles.

Jaguar Land Rover Cuts UK Jobs, Moves Discovery Production to Slovakia

12 Jun 2018, 11:06 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Industry

Confirmed since December 2015, Jaguar Land Rover will start production at its new plant in Nitra, Slovakia towards the end of the year. 1,400 people are already employed in Nitra as the automaker gears up to build the Discovery in Slovakia.
19 photosAs the headline implies, the automaker’s operations in the United Kingdom will be affected by this decision (up to 1,000 jobs will be lost at the Solihull and Halewood plants). “The potential losses of some agency employed staff in the UK is a tough one but forms part of our long-term manufacturing strategy as we transform our business globally.” As simply put as possible, money talks and that’s the gist of it.
According to chief financial officer Ken Gregor, moving production away from the United Kingdom saves “thousands of pounds” off the cost of every vehicle produced. While that doesn’t sound bad at all from a financial standpoint, it’s a bit of a shame so many workers have to leave the company as a result of this decision.
At the present moment, Land Rover and Jaguar “employ more than 43,000 people globally and support around 240,000 more through our dealerships, suppliers and local businesses.” In addition to the United Kingdom and Slovakia, the Tata Motors-owned automaker also relies on Brazil-, China-, and Austria-built vehicles.
Regarding the Halewood and Solihull assembly plants, significant investments towards technological upgrades are in the pipeline. Halewood will be the home of the second-gen Evoque while Solihull is where the full-size Range Rover is made.
Looking at the future, Jaguar Land Rover said in January 2018 that it would decide by year’s end whether to manufacture electric vehicles in the United Kingdom or soldier on with a heterogeneous lineup. Speaking of which, Jaguar Land Rover considers expanding production by means of a new plant in the United States.
But on the other hand, such an investment isn't viable right now because Jaguar and Land Over doesn’t sell too well in this part of the world. The best-selling nameplate of the group in the U.S. in 2017 is the Range Rover Sport, moving 19,153 examples in the previous year.

Opel Ends Production Of Astra GTC, Zafira

20 Jun 2018, 9:03 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Industry

The Astra is nothing but the Chevrolet Cruze of Europe, a compact hatchback that does everything you can expect of it. But be that as it may, Opel and Vauxhall didn’t put too much effort into making the Astra as fun as its predecessor was in OPC flavor. Speaking of which, the J generation continued to be offered as the Astra GTC. But three years after the K came along, the GTC has been phased out.
16 photosFrom Autocar.co.uk: “The three-door, Astra-based GTC has also fallen as SUV demand rises.” A spokesman told the British motoring publication that the seven-year-old model’s “business case is no longer viable.”
Having sold an estimated 40,000 examples across the Old Continent during this time, it’s safe to say the Astra GTC ends production on a sour note. The Zafira people carrier is dead too, having been replaced by the PSA-developed Grandland X.
“A brand spokesman told Autocar that the seven-seat Zafira Tourer, which has been on sale since 2011, was hit by a significant move away from MPVs and the growing popularity of SUVs.” And with that, Opel and Vauxhall can now focus on what’s in with the In Crowd. MPVs are biting the dust one after the other in Europe in particular because Generation X is old, leaving millennials to dictate the market.
In addition to a three-row flagship utility vehicle confirmed to arrive by the end of the decade under the careful development of the PSA Group, Opel is also working on realigning the OPC division to the industry’s current developments. To this effect, OPC (and Vauxhall’s VXR) will be reinvented by means of electrification.
Speaking of the automaker’s electrified future, the all-new eCorsa is coming in 2020, one year after the sixth generation of the subcompact hatchback will hit dealership lots. Both variants will be manufactured at the Zaragoza plant in Spain. Now specialized in EMP2-based vehicles such as the Crossland X, the factory opened in 1982 and celebrated the 13-millionth vehicle produced in April 2018.

Porsche Cayenne Coupe Reportedly Receives the Green Light for Production

8 Jun 2018, 7:46 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Rumors

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but Porsche’s making a coupe-styled SUV based on the Cayenne. Although there’s no official confirmation on the new body style, chief executive officer Oliver Blume is reported to have granted the green light for production. Estimated time of arrival? Sometime in 2019.
7 photosAccording to Autocar, the “Cayenne Coupe will use V6 and V8 petrol engines.” Designed to “broaden the scope of Cayenne lineup and take on the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe,” the newcomer won’t have it easy if the report turns out to be true.
In addition to the three-pointed star’s GLE Coupe, there’s the BMW Group with the X6 and Audi with the all-new Q8 to tackle. And to make matters worse, the long-rumored Cayenne Coupe and Q8 are so similar in design that the Volkswagen Group could be dwelling in cannibalization. As it happens, the styling of the Q8 is loosely based on the Lamborghini Urus, and it may trickle down to Porsche as well.
Expected to go into production next year at the Leipzig plant in Germany alongside the Cayenne, the coupe-like sport utility vehicle will adopt a “liftback-style tailgate, altered rear side windows, and a new taillight design” inspired by the Panamera. Given these circumstances, you could even say that Porsche has stopped innovating to focus on mixing existing parts and technologies to come up with new products.
But you’d be wrong. Porsche continues to innovate in terms of electrification, with the Stuttgart-based company currently focused on bringing the Mission E to market in 2019. And following the Mission E electric sedan, other marques within the Volkswagen Group will be granted access to Porsche’s know-how of fast, nice-handling EVs. The cycle will eventually repeat itself, and by the middle of the 2020s, Volkswagen intends to become one of the top players in the electrified segment.
Instead of an ending note, ask yourself how model lines Porsche has in the lineup right now. The 718 and 911 boast two to three doors while the Macan, Cayenne, and Panamera feature five. That’s right, ladies and gents; the automaker that started out as a sports car company has more SUVs and sedans in the lineup than sports cars.

Opel Grandland X Switching Production to Germany in 2019, PHEV Coming in 2020

30 May 2018, 16:10 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Industry

Here’s something that few people in the industry were expecting to come true. Groupe PSA, the company that controls Opel, agreed with the IG Metall/Works Council to switch Grandland X production to Germany. The largest crossover in the German automaker’s range is currently produced in France at the Sochaux plant.
10 photosFrom the second quarter of 2018, Walvis Bay in Namibia of all places will also welcome the Grandland X. Securing Opel’s future in Germany, the model will roll off the assembly line in Eisenach from mid-2019 in two shifts. A “hybrid version,” which actually uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain shared with the Citroen C5 Aircross, “will follow in 2020.” Still, what does this mean for both of the parties?
On the one hand, French unions are angered by Groupe PSA’s decision. But on the other hand, ending assembly in Sochaux frees up space for other vehicles riding on the EMP2 platform. The French automaker assured that overflow production of the Peugeot 5008 would make up for some of the lost volume, and that’s just the start.
As for Opel, the automaker and Germany’s IG Metall union have been in a standoff with Groupe PSA for quite some time now. Securing jobs in Germany and keeping Opel as German as possible is what has been achieved from this point of view. The agreement also includes the framework for job guarantees until 2023, as well as “significant investments” at the sites in Eisenach, Russelsheim, and Kaiserslautern.
“We will ensure long-term utilization of our German sites and thus protect employment – and this well into the next decade – with attractive models and high-quality components,” declared Michael Lohscheller, CEO of Opel. “We are deeply rooted in Germany and our German plants are and will remain our backbone.”
Marketed under the Vauxhall brand in the United Kingdom, the Grandland X starts at 24,000 euros in Opel’s home market. In the Albion, the Vauxhall-badged crossover is priced from 22,755 pounds sterling.
