BMW X4 F26 Production To Stop In March, X4 G02 Incoming

13 Feb 2018, 7:24 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

Following the premiere of the G01 X3, BMW will be refreshing the Sports Activity Coupe equivalent of the compact luxury crossover. G02 is the codename for the second-generation X4, and considering that production of the F26 X4 is ending in March, we’ll soon get to meet the newcomer.
12 photosAlthough not confirmed by BMW, a report from Bimmertoday quotes insider sources that are adamant the F26 story will come to its conclusion next month. The timing is fitting considering that the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina has to upgrade the production line as soon as possible, more so if you bear in mind the G02 will debut for the 2019 model year.
Spied uncamouflaged in M40d xDrive flavor in August 2017 (pictured), then spied some more with various degrees of camouflage, the all-new X4 will be topped by the M. In a similar fashion to the X3 M, the coupe-ified sibling will use the BMW S58 inline-6 engine, sending an estimated 460 horsepower and 600 Nm of to all four wheels through an eight-speed auto.
Customers who don’t want the full-on M treatment can settle for the M40i or M40d, with these babies packing 360 and 320 horsepower, respectively. The torquiest of the lot, of course, is the M40d, which is currently available with anything from 620 to 760 Nm (457 and 561 pound-feet).
Underpinned by the CLAR platform, the G02 will be lighter than the preceding model by up to 55 kilograms (121 pounds). The underpinnings are also crucial to the technological suite of the X4, which will include the latest version of iDrive infotainment (with the 12.5-inch touchscreen), gesture control from the 7 Series and 5 Series, as well as steering and Lane Change Assistant. M Sport suspension system with Dynamic Damper Control, M Sport brakes, and variable sport steering will also be offered.
On that note, could the G02 X4 make its public debut at next month’s Geneva Motor Show?

Fiat Announces The Production Of The 500,000th 500L At Kragujevac In Serbia

25 Feb 2018, 17:21 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

Introduced at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show with great pomp and circumstance, the 500L is a poor excuse for a multi-purpose vehicle. In addition to the questionable styling and insufficient range of capabilities as a family car, the 500L also happens to be one of the worst cars you can buy right now from the standpoint of reliability.
22 photosIn the United States, for example, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recalled the 500L time and again. The automatic transmission, powertrain control module, irregularities in the driver’s knee airbag system, and an improperly folded passenger frontal airbag are just a handful of the issues, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Complaints submitted to safecar.gov number in the hundreds, and that’s saying something about how bad of a car the 500L actually is.
Despite all this well-deserved criticism, Fiat gave the 500L a second chance with the 2018 model year. The mid-cycle refresh brags with 40 percent new parts and 1,800 design changes, but only time will tell if these are enough to convince the public into buying the 500L over a sport utility vehicle, minivan, or other MPVs.
The 2018 model year is also marked by the production of the 500,000th example of the 500L, which left the assembly line in Kragujevac, Serbia a few days ago. As per Fiat, “the new record confirms the success enjoyed by the model since its launch in 2012,” butthat choice of words doesn't paint the full picture.
Take the calendar 2017 as a prime example of how the cookie crumbles. With 63,100 sales in Europe, the 500L had lost a staggering 23 percent of sales volume compared to the prior year. The Ford B-Max, which has been discontinued in favor of the EcoSport crossover, gained 7 percent (43,339) during the period. The Hyundai ix20, Opel Meriva, Kia Venga, Citroen C3 Picasso, and Nissan Note are free falling, which is a testament to how irrelevant the MPV has become.
To whom it may concern, the landmark 500L is finished in bi-color Sicilia Orange with a gloss-black roof. The Cross model in question is equipped with the 1.6-liter MultiJet turbo diesel four-cylinder engine, packing 120 PS.

U.S.-spec VW Passat Celebrates 700,000th Example Built At Chattanooga Plant

9 May 2018, 11:10 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

As you’re well aware, sedans aren’t doing that great in the United States of America. In fact, all conventional-bodied passenger cars are playing second fiddle to crossovers and SUVs, which goes to show that demand dictates an automaker’s product lineup. To this effect, the Chattanooga plant will add a second SUV in 2019 in the form of the five-seat Atlas Cross Sport concept.
13 photosBack in March 2018, Volkswagen’s North American division confirmed “the market is shifting from sedans and passenger cars to family-friendly SUVs.” As a consequence of dwindling demand for the Chattanooga-built Passat, the plant will be idled for two weeks this spring. During this period, Volkswagen will re-tool the facility to strengthen Atlas production, the largest SUV in the automaker’s lineup.
Even though the U.S.-spec Passat sold just over 4,000 examples in April, the mid-size sedan has seen better days. The best year of the nameplate was 2012, when Volkswagen delivered 117,023 examples of the breed to North American customers. In 2017, by comparison, sales halved to 60,722 units.
Production of the U.S.-spec Passat started at Chattanooga in 2011, and to date, the Wolfsburg-based automaker managed to roll out 700,000 models. The 700,000th Passat is the Reflex Silver-painted GT pictured in the featured photo, boasting a two-tone interior, 3.6-liter VR6 engine, and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.
“The history of Volkswagen Chattanooga is intertwined with the history of the U.S. Passat. As we grow and add models, we take pride in continuing to produce quality Passats in the state of Tennessee,” declared Antonio Pinto, president and head honcho of Volkswagen’s Chattanooga production facility. “I am very proud of our team for reaching this important milestone and look forward to more to come.”
Different from the ground up compared to the European model, the North American sedan is scheduled for a complete redesign in 2019. And as expected, the newcomer will transition to the better-handling MQB platform of the European Passat.

Number of Porsche Employees Jumps Over 30,000 for the First Time

22 Jun 2018, 11:54 UTC · by Daniel Patrascu
/ Home / News / Industry

The number of people who can afford to buy a Porsche has increased dramatically in the past few years, and in response to that so did the number of employees the company has on its payroll.
6 photosAccording to a statement released on Friday by Porsche, the number of people it employs jumped to over 30,000 for the first time in the carmaker’s history. This month, Porsche said it has 30,500 employees, and that number is set to grow.
Compared to 2010, the figure represents an increase in staff of 130 percent. The first major addition will be the 700 employees who are to be added at the Zuffenhausen site to support the production of the electric Taycan model.
“Many of Porsche’s new employees are part of Generation Y. In total, this demographic makes up more than 40 percent of the workforce,” said the carmaker in a statement.
“The company’s refined cultural concept gives everyone a shared understanding of what makes Porsche tick. The central umbrella terms of family, passion, sportiness and pioneering spirit also form the basis of the Porsche Code, the new management concept.”
The Taycan, which received its official production name at the beginning of the month, will mark a major expansion of the product portfolio. The model is hoped to usher in the era of electric vehicles and further increase the appeal of the brand.
The carmaker would be investing six billion euros in electromobility by 2022, double the size of the sum initially announced for this project.
When it is launched, the Taycan will come with a pair of permanently activated synchronous motors (PSM) that deliver 600 horsepower. The model is said to reach 60 miles per hour in well under 3.5 seconds.
The battery pack that is to be fitted in the Taycan is capable of giving it a range of 300 miles (482 km), in line with all other high-end electric cars on the market today.

McLaren Milestone: 15,000 Cars Built Since 2011

27 May 2018, 9:06 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

In 2011, McLaren started production of the 12C at its facility in Woking, Surrey. Seven years later, the British automaker celebrates 15,000 vehicles manufactured since then, a feat that comes less than 18 months after the 10,000th automobile built.
34 photosFirst things first, the milestone comes after a most successful 2017, with McLaren shipping 3,340 cars in the previous calendar year. And secondly, the F1 from the 1990s came out at a time when McLaren’s automotive division wasn’t even a thing.
“The Sports Series has been pivotal to driving this growth, with the 570S Spider now the most popular of the range,” said Mike Flewitt, chief executive officer at McLaren Automotive. “The fact we are now able to produce 20 cars a day is of course a great testament to the hard work and dedication of every one of our workforce, who should feel justifiably proud and part of this great team effort.”
For the time being, there are three tiers of road-going McLaren models. The range starts with the Sports Series (540 and 570), continues with the Super Series (720), and tops with the Ultimate Series (P1, Senna, BP23 Hyper-GT). Bearing in mind that the Woking-based company came out with the 12C seven years ago, it’s very, very impressive how much things have changed in such a short amount of time.
At the present moment, around two-thirds of global sales come from the Sports Series and one-third from the Super Series. The Ultimate Series, as you can tell from the pricing of the Senna, is in a different league altogether. And speaking of the Senna, the twin-turbo V8-powered blunderbuss has recently entered production.
The place where it’s built, the McLaren Production Center, was designed by Foster + Partners and took just under 14 months from breaking ground to the first-ever 12C approved for shipping. Be that as it may, Lamborghini (3,815) and Ferrari (8,398) sell more vehicles than McLaren. Heck, even Rolls-Royce managed to deliver 3,362 cars to its customers in 2017.
But on the other hand, you could say that McLaren is the most exclusive name of the lot by a long margin. And chances are things won't change, more so if you bear in mind McLaren doesn't plan to add an SUV to its lineup.

Chevrolet Sonic Will Stick Around Until 2019

10 May 2018, 13:19 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

Even though Cadillac decided to pull the plug on the ATS Sedan, Chevrolet is confident the Sonic deserves another model year despite the fact passenger cars are not selling all that well in the United States. According to spokesman Nick Jaynes Morgan, “Sonic will indeed be sold to both retail and fleet customers for 2019.”
9 photosRumors of the Sonic’s imminent demise gained traction after the golden bowtie took the veils off the 2019 Spark, Cruze, and Malibu, leaving the subcompact hatchback and sedan out of the equation. On the other hand, Morgan’s confirmation contradicts the jibber-jabber, paving the way to another year of disappointing sales.
“Chevy's investment in its sedans and hatchback stands in marked contrast to Ford,” highlights The Car Connection, which is true if you bear in mind the Blue Oval stopped production of the Focus and C-Max without even announcing it. Given time, the Ford Motor Company’s passenger-car lineup in the United States will consist of the Focus Active (imported from China) and Flat Rock-built Mustang.
Over at General Motors, the Impala is at risk of discontinuation over dwindling sales. From 97,006 examples in 2016, the full-size sedan nosedived to 75,877 units in 2017. And yes, sales from the first four months of 2018 are worse compared to the same period last year. Wanna bet ten bucks the Impala will be gone by 2020?
The Car Connection reports the ordering guide for the 2019 Sonic “shows no notable changes,” meaning that the hatchback and sedan will carry on in LS, LT, and Premier trim levels. The Sonic starts at $15,295 plus $875 destination, featuring the EcoTec 1.8-liter engine as standard. Fuel economy for the manual-equipped Sonic Sedan is EPA-rated 29 miles per gallon combined (26 city and 35 highway).
Including destination, care to guess how much the Sonic Hatchback costs in fully-loaded flavor, including the automatic transmission and 1.4-liter turbo? It's $26,685, and we're just as surprised as you are.

2019 Acura RDX Starts Rolling Off The Assembly Line in East Liberty, Ohio

16 May 2018, 9:03 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

After Honda announced that the 2019 Insight is in production in Greensburg, Indiana, the peeps at Acura follow suit with the all-new RDX in East Liberty, Ohio. The 10-speed automatic gearbox that comes as standard regardless of trim level is made further south in Georgia at the automaker’s Tallapoosa transmission plant.
28 photosRegarding the 2.0-liter VTEC Turbo, the direct-injected four-cylinder motor is manufactured in Anna, Ohio. Rated at 272 horsepower (276 PS) and 280 pound-feet (380 Nm) of torque, the engine can be matched to the available Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive system. It’s this piece of equipment, along with the “exclusive platform” that led Acura to characterize the Gen 3 as the best-handling RDX yet.
“This new RDX defines the future of Acura, and our Ohio team did an incredible job preparing this first in a new generation of Acura vehicles for our customers,” declared Jim Hefner, plant manager at the East Liberty. Pricing isn’t available, but the wait won’t be long now that we know the RDX will arrive at dealers in June.
A “clean-sheet, top-to-bottom redesign” of the popular five-passenger crossover, the newcomer should be that bit more expensive than the 2018 model year ($36,000) with the 279-horsepower 3.5-liter SOHC i-VTEC V6 motor. At the other end of the spectrum, the 2018 Acura RDX tops at $44,200 for the Advance AWD.
Designed in Los Angeles, California and developed by the automaker’s North America team in Raymond, Ohio, the 2019 Acura RDX will spawn an A-Spec variant aimed at the more handling-centric customer. The A-Spec also happens to look the part thanks to gloss-black exterior detailing, 20-inch Shark Gray alloy wheels, red-and-black interior, larger tailpipe finishers, and sporty gauge cluster.
The RDX is one of the five models manufactured in Ohio, alongside the ILX and TLX sedans plus the MDX sport utility vehicle and NSX supercar. Regarding the NSX, some people claim the Type R and Roadster are just around the corner although Acura refused to confirm both models.

2019 Ford Focus Going Into Production In June, Here's What To Expect

25 Feb 2018, 18:55 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

Late 2010. That’s when the third-generation Focus went into production, which is a long time ago. All eyes are on the Focus Mk4 for a while now, especially after Ford announced that the Focus RS will cross the great divide at the beginning of April.
14 photosThe Ford Motor Company confirmed that the Focus Mk4 will skip the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, with the big reveal scheduled for April in Germany. The home of Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz is where the newcomer will be manufactured, with the stomping ground of the compact-sized model being the Saarlouis Body and Assembly Plant.
Phase one of production is scheduled for June 2018. The five-door hatchback is the first body style that will come off the assembly line, in no less than four trim levels: Trend, Trend Business, Titanium, and ST-Line. On the drivetrain front, customers will be offered a six-speed manual and an optional automatic transmission with eight forward gears.
Engines, you ask? Two will be offered at first, coming in the form of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder turbo (85, 100, and 125 horsepower) and the 1.5-liter EcoBlue turbo diesel (95 and 120 horsepower). But that’s not the end of the story.
Phase two of production will unfold in September 2018. That’s when Ford of Europe will start making the station wagon body style alongside the Vignale trim level. The beginning of autumn will see the Focus Mk4 gain a handful more engines, starting with the 1.5-liter EcoBoost with 150 and 175 horsepower, respectively. The third and final engine, for the time being, is the 2.0-liter EcoBlue, which is anticipated to develop 150 horsepower.
On the matter of features, Ford’s all-new Focus will benefit from 8 previously unavailable driving-assist technologies, FordPass Connect, wireless charging for Qi-enabled smartphones, hands-free tailgate, head-up display, B&O Play premium audio system, and a panoramic roof.
The Focus Active, which is a faux crossover of sorts, is expected to arrive at the beginning of 2019. On an ending note, look forward to three new exterior colors: Azure Blue, Island Blue, and Millenium Gray.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Starts Production at Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria

18 May 2018, 6:53 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

Unveiled in January at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the W464 is now rolling off the assembly line at Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. The three-pointed star has been building the G-Class here since the very beginning, back in 1979 when the 460 series of the Gelandewagen went on sale.
54 photos“With the model change the new G-Class experienced the biggest transformation in its 39 years-old history,” declared Gunnar Guthenke, head of the Off-Road Product Group at Mercedes-Benz. “The superior development goal for the new G-Class was to improve the off-road capabilities even more,” concluded the official.
Raising the bar higher than the W463 did from 1990 to 2018, the W464 is available with two engine options for the time being, namely the G500 and G63. The G65 went the way of the dodo because the twin-turbocharged V12 couldn’t keep up with the latest of emissions standards, which means that twin-turbo V8s is all we get.
The 4.0-liter engine with hot-vee layout in the 500 is rated at 422 PS (416 horsepower) and 610 Nm (450 pound-feet) of torque, with the M176 connected to the 9G-Tronic automatic transmission with nine forward ratios from the get-go. The 63, on the other hand, sees the M176 get the AMG treatment for an output of 585 PS (577 horsepower) and 850 Nm (627 pound-feet) of torque. Not bad at all, right?
When all is said and done, the party piece of the G-Class is how versatile the W464 is off the beaten path. But for a change, Mercedes-Benz put the effort into making the G easier to live with on a daily basis thanks to upgrades such as independent suspension at the front and a cockpit inspired from the W222 S-Class.
To date, the three-pointed star and Magna Steyr have produced more than 300,000 examples of the G-Class. Sales have been on the rise since 2009, and starting in 2012, the G has established a sales record each year. 2017 is the highlight from a commercial standpoint, with the G-Class achieving over 22,000 units sold in a year.

2019 Subaru Ascent Starts Production in Indiana, Arriving at Dealers in June

8 May 2018, 14:10 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

Remember the Tribeca? Subaru is at it again with the Ascent, sporting three rows of seats and enough space for eight passengers. The newest Subaru of them all is now in production at the Lafayette plant in Indiana, with stateside dealers informed that the first examples of the mid-size crossover SUV would be delivered in June 2018.
33 photos“The Subaru Ascent is a great addition to our product lineup,” declared Tom Easterday, senior executive vice-president of the assembly plant. “Production of this outstanding new family vehicle allowed us to create hundreds of new jobs at SIA, and also at our suppliers in Indiana and across the country.”
Now that the Ascent has been welcomed into the family, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. expects production to total 400,000 vehicles per year. Since 1989, the Lafayette facility and its associates have built more than five million vehicles.
The roomiest Subaru ever also happens to be the most expensive in the range, starting at $31,995 ($32,970 including destination). To put that into greater perspective, the WRX comes in on second place ($26,995 without destination charge), while the Outback and BRZ kick off at $25,895 and $25,595, respectively.
There are four trim levels to choose from, including the Premium, Limited, and Touring. Even the entry-level Ascent comes with key features such as Symmetrical AWD with X-Mode, EyeSight driver-assist technology, Starlink infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 18-inch wheels, and black-painted roof rails.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Touring ($44,695) comes with Java Brown leather-trimmed upholstery, second-row captain’s chairs, TomTom satellite navigation, 792 watts and 14 speakers for the Harman Kardon premium audio system, panoramic power moonroof, and a 180-degree front-view camera system.
Proven up to 5,000 pounds in terms of towing capacity, the Ascent is a sport utility vehicle for the long haul. To this effect, there’s one engine-and-transmission combination available.
The four-cylinder direct-injected 2.4-liter engine churns out 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet thanks to turbocharging, translating to 27 miles per gallon on the highway and 21 in the city. The Lineartronic CVT, meanwhile, is designed to make driving effortless both in the urban jungle and on the open road.
