Codenamed F40, the third generation of the 1 Series is now in production at the Leipzig factory in Germany. The facility is also responsible for the 2 Series Coupe and Convertible, M2 Competition, 2 Series Active Tourer, i3, and i8.

The first-ever example of the breed is a 118i with the sport design package and blue paintwork, an underwhelming car given the output of the three-cylinder turbo engine. The B38 develops 140 PS (138 horsepower) and 220 Nm (162 pound-feet) of torque in this application, and the suck-squeeze-bang-blow is sent from the crankshaft to the front axle by way of a six-speed manual gearbox.
BMW will extend F40 production to the Regensburg plant in November, and further still, the 2 Series Gran Coupe will follow with front- and all-wheel drive. As a rival to the Mercedes-Benz CLA, the F44 leaves much to be desired. At the very top of the range, the M135i xDrive will have to suffice with 306 PS (301 horsepower) from two liters of displacement and a turbocharger.
The previous generation of the 1 Series, called F20 for the five-door hatchback and F21 for the three-door coupe, was produced over the course of eight years in 424,111 units. With its dismissal, people hope that Alfa Romeo will redesign the Giulietta with rear- and all-wheel drive on the Giorgio platform.
For the time being, the most exciting model in this segment is the A 45 S 4Matic+ without a shadow of a doubt. Mercedes-Benz has integrated Drift Mode and more than 400 horsepower in a compact-sized hatchback, and this setup will extend to the CLA coupe-styled sedan and the GLB crossover utility vehicle.
Turning the focus back on the 1 Series, the F40 is also available with a three-cylinder turbo diesel and four-cylinder turbo diesel. An eight-speed automatic transmission and seven-speed DCT are also offered, and the entry-level engine option in Germany is the 116d.
On that note, how do you feel about BMW utilizing the UKL2 platform for the newest 1 Series of them all?
