like, you could do worse than to see the vehicles that today’s auto designers collect, rebuild and restore.
That’s part of the attraction of Design on Woodward, the annual car show featuring classics and performance cars owned by members of General Motors’s design staff.
Designers, model makers, sculptors and more parade their vehicles from Design HQ at the GM tech center in Warren to Memorial Park on the corner of Woodward Avenue and 13 Mile Road during Dream Cruise week each year.
Refreshingly, the show isn’t a GM-only affair. This year’s display included performance cars of all stripes, from a Dodge Neon SRT-4 to a $100,000-plus Audi R8.Anybody who thinks the idea of high-roofed family vehicles like the Chevy Traverse and Ford Explorer are new might change their mind after walking around a spacious and ornate 1950s Chevrolet station wagon. The proportions of ‘50s classics may hold many clues to automakers’ design plans for the next generation of SUV-passenger car crossovers. The best of frenemies, a 1965 Chevrolet Impala with a 283 V8, was parked next to a 1970 Ford Mustang Mach One next to Woodward, where the brands have competed for bragging rights for decades. Pickups are a rising trend in car collecting, performance and customization. A blue-green 1970 Chevy pickup looked prehistoric compared to a modern Silverado. A lifted, chopped-top Blazer SUV proved the idea of fun, sporty SUVs is nothing new.Contact Mark Phelan: mmphelan@freepress.com or 313-222-6731. Follow him on Twitter @mark_phelan.

It’s unclear when Musk sent the shorts to Einhorn but, in the past week, the Tesla chief executive has found himself embroiled in a controversial move to take his auto company off public markets. Since telling his followers he has “funding secured” for the deal, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has requested more information… Continue reading Hedge fund manager betting against Tesla gets box of short

Number of Porsche Employees Jumps Over 30,000 for the First Time

/ Home / News / Industry
The number of people who can afford to buy a Porsche has increased dramatically in the past few years, and in response to that so did the number of employees the company has on its payroll.
6 photosAccording to a statement released on Friday by Porsche, the number of people it employs jumped to over 30,000 for the first time in the carmaker’s history. This month, Porsche said it has 30,500 employees, and that number is set to grow.
Compared to 2010, the figure represents an increase in staff of 130 percent. The first major addition will be the 700 employees who are to be added at the Zuffenhausen site to support the production of the electric Taycan model.
“Many of Porsche’s new employees are part of Generation Y. In total, this demographic makes up more than 40 percent of the workforce,” said the carmaker in a statement.
“The company’s refined cultural concept gives everyone a shared understanding of what makes Porsche tick. The central umbrella terms of family, passion, sportiness and pioneering spirit also form the basis of the Porsche Code, the new management concept.”
The Taycan, which received its official production name at the beginning of the month, will mark a major expansion of the product portfolio. The model is hoped to usher in the era of electric vehicles and further increase the appeal of the brand.
The carmaker would be investing six billion euros in electromobility by 2022, double the size of the sum initially announced for this project.
When it is launched, the Taycan will come with a pair of permanently activated synchronous motors (PSM) that deliver 600 horsepower. The model is said to reach 60 miles per hour in well under 3.5 seconds.
The battery pack that is to be fitted in the Taycan is capable of giving it a range of 300 miles (482 km), in line with all other high-end electric cars on the market today.

McLaren Milestone: 15,000 Cars Built Since 2011
27 May 2018, 9:06 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile
In 2011, McLaren started production of the 12C at its facility in Woking, Surrey. Seven years later, the British automaker celebrates 15,000 vehicles manufactured since then, a feat that comes less than 18 months after the 10,000th automobile built.
34 photosFirst things first, the milestone comes after a most successful 2017, with McLaren shipping 3,340 cars in the previous calendar year. And secondly, the F1 from the 1990s came out at a time when McLaren’s automotive division wasn’t even a thing.
“The Sports Series has been pivotal to driving this growth, with the 570S Spider now the most popular of the range,” said Mike Flewitt, chief executive officer at McLaren Automotive. “The fact we are now able to produce 20 cars a day is of course a great testament to the hard work and dedication of every one of our workforce, who should feel justifiably proud and part of this great team effort.”
For the time being, there are three tiers of road-going McLaren models. The range starts with the Sports Series (540 and 570), continues with the Super Series (720), and tops with the Ultimate Series (P1, Senna, BP23 Hyper-GT). Bearing in mind that the Woking-based company came out with the 12C seven years ago, it’s very, very impressive how much things have changed in such a short amount of time.
At the present moment, around two-thirds of global sales come from the Sports Series and one-third from the Super Series. The Ultimate Series, as you can tell from the pricing of the Senna, is in a different league altogether. And speaking of the Senna, the twin-turbo V8-powered blunderbuss has recently entered production.
The place where it’s built, the McLaren Production Center, was designed by Foster + Partners and took just under 14 months from breaking ground to the first-ever 12C approved for shipping. Be that as it may, Lamborghini (3,815) and Ferrari (8,398) sell more vehicles than McLaren. Heck, even Rolls-Royce managed to deliver 3,362 cars to its customers in 2017.
But on the other hand, you could say that McLaren is the most exclusive name of the lot by a long margin. And chances are things won't change, more so if you bear in mind McLaren doesn't plan to add an SUV to its lineup.
