As part of a restructuring, Mercedes-Benz is laying off 3,600 employees at its plant in Brazil. The company will lay off 2,200 employees and will no longer renew fixed-term contracts with another 1,400 employees at its truck and bus chassis plant in Sao Bernardo from December, the German carmaker announced on Tuesday.
The production of front axles and transmissions as well as logistics and maintenance services are being outsourced in order to counteract cost pressure and changes in the automotive industry.
The company’s main workers’ union has asked to start negotiations.
