The Munich carmaker BMW has secured CO2-reduced steel for its plants worldwide. From 2026, more than a third of the necessary steel should be obtained using processes that emit less climate-damaging carbon dioxide than conventional steel production, the company announced on Tuesday.
That reduces the CO2 footprint by around 900,000 tons a year, said BMW Purchasing Manager Joachim Post. In the future, steel is to be produced using electrical processes that use electricity from renewable energies, as well as steel from hydrogen processes. In Europe, for example, Salzgitter supplies the necessary steel, for the USA corresponding contracts have been concluded with Steel Dynamics and Big River Steel, and HBIS was named as a partner for China.
