A Monday in winter, 11:30 a.m. The “Café Royal” is inconspicuously located on Schützenstrasse in Dortmund, the windows are covered with matt foil and a yellowed awning hangs over them. A few people are standing in front of the door and are smoking. The café is full of people, around 30 men are sitting at tables, leaning against the counter or throwing money into slot machines. No table is free, it is loud, German is hardly spoken. Men without a migration background are suspected of being plainclothes police officers. The main drink is espresso, occasionally also beer. Drivers keep coming into the café looking for guests who have parked in the second row: “Who does the black Audi belong to?” A man jumps up and runs out.

When the photographer unpacked his camera in the café, a man came up to him: “No more photos here!” Too many guests complained that they could be seen in the background when the new star of Dortmund’s Nordstadt was photographed: Chico , the lottery millionaire.
