Economics Minister Robert Habeck wants to subsidize the price of electricity for industry with many billions of euros. A mistake, say critics.
What do an Arcelor-Mittal steelworks in Bremen, a Volkswagen battery cell factory currently under construction in Salzgitter, Lower Saxony, and a Wacker chemical plant in Burghausen, Bavaria, have in common? Answer: All three industrial companies need a lot of energy for their production – and therefore have a keen interest in electric power in particular becoming much cheaper in Germany than it is today.

The major industrial consumers of electricity are correspondingly relieved that Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck from the Greens has presented a proposal that is intended to help the corporations quickly lower their electricity bills. The demand for a lower “industrial electricity price” has long been high on their wish list.
