At the government consultations, the Chinese side raves about all the cooperation opportunities – and explains to the federal government the advantages of an open economy.

At the end, a small gesture of kindness in the Chancellery. For a good 17 minutes, Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang told the press what they discussed with their ministers at the seventh government consultations. The chancellor looked at the speaking slip and was calm and sober. Li, on the other hand, almost exuberantly in his words about what is possible when China and Germany go hand in hand.

Then the press conference is over and Li looks at the chancellor, who is about to leave but has forgotten the headphones in his ear. A smiling hint, a thanking smile, a jointly smiling exit. Questions from journalists are not allowed. The Chinese had insisted, otherwise the “press meeting” would not have taken place. That’s an unfriendly gesture.
