The VolkswagenGroup has the top position in pure electric cars in Germany Tesla conquered. With 41,475 first registrations in the first seven months of the year, the Wolfsburg brand pushed ahead of its US competitors. Tesla sold 40,289 cars in the same period.
This is based on publications by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) in Flensburg. Tesla was still clearly ahead in the first half of 2023 and throughout 2022.
As of the end of July, Mercedes followed with 20,613 first-time e-registrations ahead of Audi with 16,786, BMW with 15,987 and Hyundai with 15,411. Overall, the KBA registered 268,926 first-time registrations of purely electric cars from January to July. With combustion engines, the number was a good 1.64 million.
Increasing electric registrations in July
However, the VW figures can also be used to estimate how far there is still to the desired dominance of pure electric cars in new registrations: Volkswagen’s popular pure electric models ID.4 and ID.5 are already ahead of the former The Polo, the bestseller with a combustion engine, is still far behind the current registration figures for the Golf, Passat, Tiguan and T-Roc. Overall, just 7.1 percent of all VW new car registrations from January to July were for the two electric models. To classify: The Golf comes to 14.7 percent.
Remarkable: In July, registrations of electric models at Volkswagen increased significantly. In that month, the ID.4/ID.5 accounted for more than nine percent of all new VW registrations.
Viewed across all drive types, the VW Golf is currently (once again) the most popular model among Germans. From January to July, 44,500 new Golfs were registered. However, the VW T-Roc, a compact SUV, follows directly behind with 42,500 new registrations.
The most popular small car, on the other hand, comes from Italy: the Fiat 500.
