The showrooms in the center of Shanghai are reminiscent of those of Apple: lots of space, lots of white. The staff is happy about the interest and proudly shows the large screens in the cockpit. A layman will not see any qualitative difference to western vehicles. The cars are elegant. And largely unknown in Germany. Even if the Chinese brand Voyah has now ventured into Europe. In the shop opposite, there are Aito vehicles alongside all sorts of smartphones. Aito is a car brand in which Huawei also has a stake.

Anyone traveling in China’s metropolises will see how different the car market in the People’s Republic has become. The classic car manufacturers from Germany, Japan and Korea have lost their dominance. The vast majority of electric cars on the road come from local manufacturers. According to the International Energy Agency, more than half of all electric cars in the world are on Chinese roads, and China’s share of global electric sales is 60 percent.
