The two men from Afghanistan have actually already made it. They hang out in a small room with 15 other adults and a boy; some lie on bunks with one arm across their faces, others stand at the window and look out through the blinds at the Autobahn.

The air is in the small building at the former border crossing at Ludwigsdorf near Görlitz, directly on the A 4 to Poland. “We don’t understand that we should go back,” says one of the men excitedly in broken English. “Everyone can stay, only we should go back to Poland. Why?” The two must have misunderstood something, says one of the federal police officers. Here, in the so-called check-out room, only migrants were waiting who were allowed to continue to one of the three Saxon initial reception centers in Chemnitz, Dresden or Leipzig.
