France’s car companies Stellantis and Renault could be doubly happy if the EU imposes punitive tariffs on Chinese cars as requested: On the one hand, they will then see themselves better protected from unpleasant competition. On the other hand, Chinese retaliation measures would be expected, but that would then be the main hit the German competitors, and China would then indirectly provide the French with a friendly service. Until now, German car companies have had a strong presence on the Chinese market, while the French have not.
