It could be a groundbreaking development: BMW has developed a clutch assistant that, at the driver’s request, can also automatically carry out the shifting process in addition to the clutch. The Bavarian motorcycle manufacturer is introducing this world first for the large travel enduro R 1300 GS next autumn. The new system, called “Automated Shift Assist” or simply ASA, is expected to cost just over 1000 euros extra. So far, automatic clutches have only been used in motocross. In normal street motorcycle construction, quickshifters have become established over the past fifteen years in favor of faster gear changes.
