Oliver Blume took on a lot of construction sites when he took over as head of Europe’s largest car manufacturer, Volkswagen, almost two years ago. One of the illusions that VW had indulged in under the leadership of its predecessor Herbert Diess was that the company would transform itself into a software developer that would single-handedly program entire architectures for cars of the future. The pact with the American start-up Rivian marks a further step towards a greater sense of reality.
