Sports utility vehicles, SUVs, have long since become a fixture in the traffic scene. Strictly speaking, they have been around since the mid-1940s, after which they have developed considerably. The Willys Station Wagon is considered an early pioneer of large off-road vehicles. It appeared shortly after the Second World War. Other manufacturers followed, including Rover with the rustic Land Rover. At that time, no one knew the term sports utility vehicle. Rumor has it that the newfangled designation first appeared in a 1974 Jeep Cherokee brochure.
