There is a story to be told this summer from Saarlouis on the French border that reveals a lot about the German economy. The car company Ford will soon be closing its factory there, a bitter blow for the city. But this story is not about decline. It’s about change. The area that Ford leaves in Saarlouis does not then become a sad wasteland. The Swabian family company Vetter wants to build a state-of-the-art new production facility there in the coming years for around 450 million euros. Not for cars, but for medicines.
