The mining tradition in Altenberg, Saxony, dates back to the Middle Ages. The start of tin mining here dates back to 1230. “The miners were primarily interested in tin and later also tungsten,” says geologist Thomas Dittrich as he walks through a 17th-century tunnel beneath the Zinnwald district. Today this mine is part of the visitor mine, which is one of Altenberg’s tourist attractions.
