A light breeze blows in from the Paximadia Islands. The last bathers sit obliviously on their beach towels and count the seconds until the red-hot ball of sun disappears over the horizon. They pause and look at the sea, their bare feet in the sand that is still warm from the heat of the day. The legendary Matala motto is still emblazoned on the quay wall today: “Today is live. Tomorrow never comes.” The slogan has long been cult. It is renewed every year with fresh wall paint and adorns T-shirts, postcards and other souvenir knickknacks in town. It was written decades ago by Giorgios Germanakis, the Matala fisherman who himself became a hippie back then.
