Does Wolfsburg need a theater? The fact that a city defines itself by, as Lewis Mumford explains in his epochal study “The City”, “promoting the arts and becoming art itself” remained an alien idea for a long time in the Volkswagen location created in 1938. After 1954 there had only been “theater around the theater” (according to “Wolfsburger Nachrichten”), in 1965 there was a call for tenders and the “first commendation” of a design by Hans Scharoun, famous for the musical “Weinberg” of the Berlin Philharmonic (opened 1963).
