The expansion of renewable energies is progressing, but when it comes to digitalization, the German electricity system lags significantly behind the rest of Europe. Only 160,000 of the more than 50 million electricity meters in Germany – less than one percent – are “intelligent”, meaning they can measure electricity consumption in real time and communicate it to the network operator.
