VW’s threat to close a factory in Germany casts a shadow over a potentially bleak automotive future. In a country like Italy you can study what the decline of a location can look like. Production south of the Alps has been declining for years and now the latest figures have once again alarmed those involved. In the first nine months of this year, more than 40 percent fewer passenger cars were produced at the manufacturer Stellantis’ sites than a year ago. For comparison: In Germany, production by all manufacturers fell by 6 percent during this period. One of the most important trade unions has called for a strike and demonstration in Rome on October 18th.
