Robert Habeck had imagined it differently. When the Green Economics and Climate Protection Minister presented the government’s economic forecast last fall, he still expected a growth rate of 1.3 percent for 2024. On Wednesday in Berlin he instead had to explain why the economy is shrinking for the second year in a row. The loss of Russian gas, more difficult business with China, the investment backlog – Germany should not now “let its ears hang,” appealed Habeck.
