When companies these days report their business in the third quarter, one piece of bad news follows the next. On Wednesday, Volkswagen announced that its group profit after taxes had fallen by almost two thirds. Europe’s largest car manufacturer is currently symbolic of the challenges faced by manufacturers whose traditional business is being melted away by the regulation of combustion engines, while despite billions in investments, it is not yet possible to really make money with electric cars.
