When Donald Trump talks about his favorite economic policy topic, he goes into raptures. For him, “customs” is “the most beautiful word in the dictionary,” Trump said in a panel discussion in Chicago in October. “That’s my favorite word.” Sometimes he threatens foreign companies with a 10 percent surcharge on everything they deliver to the USA, sometimes with 20 percent. When he’s on the move, he’s happy to charge even more. And the arch-enemy China should be punished with a 60 percent tariff anyway.
