As we regularly read in presentations conjured up by consultants, the car of the future will be defined primarily by software. What a mistake. Of course, the computer programs on board a car to which the occupants trust their lives must run error-free. And even if it’s not the whole thing, even small software errors can be very annoying. But the hardware determines the practical use of a car, the feel-good factor on board and also the environmental impact at least as much as the program lines. This is shown by a visit to the future laboratory of the company that invented the automobile almost 140 years ago.
