Rarely has a contract been concluded in which it becomes so clear what it means to do business in China. After months of negotiations with its partners and politicians, Volkswagen manages to withdraw from the Uighur region of Xinjiang. Serious human rights violations by the Communist Party are well documented there, which Beijing, of course, denies. At the same time, however, the group is combining the withdrawal with a clear commitment to China as a location and is extending its decades-long partnership with the Shanghai state-owned company SAIC for another decade.
