The selection process in the auto industry is progressing. Now it hits Carlos Tavares, who was CEO of the Stellantis Group until Sunday and therefore the master of Opel, Fiat and twelve other brands. He was shown the door with immediate effect. This means that Europe’s auto industry is losing one of its most prominent minds. Tavares made a name for himself as a ruthless reorganizer of Opel and was the architect of the merger of PSA and Fiat-Chrysler to form Stellantis. Synergies and cost reductions brought the group returns that its rival VW can only dream of. Tavares seemed to provide proof that volume manufacturers also have a future – if they are willing to make painful adjustments. Tavares repeatedly spoke of a “Darwinian” competition.
