German FAZ: Indictment in the diesel scandal008312

The now accused Conti managers are suspected of having promoted the use of illegal defeat devices in Volkswagen’s scandalous EA 189 engine. Continental had supplied VW with engine control units in which the supplier’s software was integrated. The software ensured that the emissions limits were adhered to on the test bench, but were significantly exceeded during normal operation at the customer’s site. Between November 2008 and September 2015, more than three million diesel vehicles are said to have been equipped and sold with a Conti engine control unit. The Hanover Regional Court must decide in the coming months whether to admit the charges and open the main proceedings. In Germany there is still no legally binding ruling on emissions fraud in the automotive industry. The defendants, including long-time Audi boss Rupert Stadler, appealed against an initial decision from Munich.
