German FAZ: The class question is solved008588

The German new car market continues to languish. In 2024, exactly 2,817,331 cars were newly registered, one percent less than in the previous year. Before Corona, more than three million new cars were the norm, the record is 3.8 million. The keeper of the numbers is the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) in Flensburg, which meticulously divides the new car market into eleven segments, regardless of the drive, i.e. diesel , petrol or electric. When comparing last year with 2023, it is clear that customer preferences are not only changing with regard to the drive, the market itself is also changing. Although SUVs and off-road vehicles have been the first choice for four out of ten new car customers for some time now, it is not foreseeable that anything will change, but the very small cars (Fiat 500 and Co.), which the KBA calls them minicars, have declined significantly. Their share still amounts to 2.9 percent, which corresponds to a decline of more than 40 percent.
