The end of industry means a lot of work. An excavator concrete and steel crushed on the site of the former ENSDORF power plant. With cutting distillers, workers disassemble the parts so that they fit on piles that can be removed. Steel is expensive, everything should be recycled. In a few weeks, the last rest of the Ensdorf power plant will have disappeared. On this day last December, however, the covers of block one and two, 30 meters high, they protrude into the sky like a stranded container ship, and was an important source of energy. The cheap electricity, which was produced here with coal from nearby mining, made steel production competitive. An industrial ecosystem that began with the soil treasures and gave Saarland its prosperity. Mining ended in 2012. Five years later, the coal current was also over.
