German FAZ: stories, songs and memories009421

Martin Falk asks the group: “What was your most beautiful vacation trip?” From the audience comes: “Croatia”, “Spain”, “Munich”. Falk stands in front of a group of seniors in the senior center of the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (ASB) in Mainz-Münchfeld. Behind him can be seen a grading, a piano, on another note stand he placed a laminated picture of a VW Beetle. He is one of twelve volunteers who lead in May, June and July through the reading hour “Summer, Sun and Spaghetti” of the Mobile Library Mainz. In the coming hour he will present short stories and poems, give up puzzles and sing together with the seniors. The mobile library is an initiative of the “Community sister plus” – an offer that supports older people who do not need care yet – and the public library Anna Seghers in Mainz. The Petra Studt project, the first community sister plus the city of Mainz. “The mobile library is based on three pillars,” explains the librarian Ursula Nawrath, “there is the delivery service for the elderly, the visiting service and the reading hours.” Via the delivery service, people from the city area can have books from the library delivered at no extra charge. If you can no longer read well, you can have it read out by the visiting service at home. The goal of all offers is to enable senior citizens to participate and get them out of loneliness. Songs mean security “We are now on Lake Garda,” says Falk. The story is about a fire -red air mattress, Markus and Kiara and the first love. Falk exchanged the picture with the VW Beetle for one with a sunset. He quotes poems by Hoffmann von Fallersleben, Fontane and Ringelnatz. When he starts the “Capri fishermen”, many of the spectators do not need text. Falk tells of Walter, who is acquainted with his own echo, of “misfortune from which the most beautiful stories become”, and the first glance at the Mediterranean.

Martin Falk reads in the ASB senior center for the second time this afternoon. A few years ago, shortly before his retirement, he became aware of the offer of the mobile library in the local newspaper. For him it is a suitable volunteering: “The target group gets older with me. As long as I can, I would like to prepare a good time, stimulate interaction and experience community.” He built his own script from the material that Ursula Nawrath put together. A lot is sung this afternoon too. “Songs mean memories, security and rediscovering for this generation,” says the former music editor. More on the topic at the end of the reading hour there is another puzzle, a story about returning home, Falk is a last song. Afterwards there are coffee and particles for all spectators. Emilia Desnica is one of them. “It was something else!” She says. Then she tells of her husband and the summers that she spent with him and the children together in Croatia. Wolfgang Ernst Karl Müller knew the sung songs from the past. “It was nice and varied,” he says. He spent the vacation in his childhood in the Odenwald. Maria Rita Eschborn remembers a pilgrimage to Rome, the communication problems with the Spanish religious sister, in which you and her mother have lived, and the big but hollow rolls for breakfast. “The library is a true treasure trove for the selection,” she says. In the Mainz city library, she is responsible for senior citizens’ work. Once the topic has been found, Nawrath also uses existing offers, such as the preses list for seniors and media bags for working with dementia patients. After this afternoon, however, she will pack suitcases. It goes to Portugal – once you get your head clear before you sit down on the script for the coming reading hours. The reading hours on the motto “Summer, sun and spaghetti” will take place until the beginning of July. Lerchenberg. Participation is free. Information on registration can be found on the website of the mobile library.
