German FAZ: Elephant baby born in the Opel Zoo009439

After around 57 years, an elephant calf was born again in the Opel Zoo in Kronberg. The female young animal got the name Kaja. As the zoo announced on Wednesday, the African elephant cow Kariba born the young animal on May 27th after 22 months. Kaja is the first elephant young in Hesse since 1968. The zoo did not publish pictures at first, but the animal is said to be seen for the first time on Thursday for journalists. Vater from Kaja is said to be Bulle Tamo, born in the Wuppertal Zoo. The last elephant baby in the Opel Zoo was born on April 15, 1968. The zoo had been trying to breed since June 2023. At that time, the elephant cow Cristina and her son Neco came from a Spanish zoo to Kronberg to strengthen the herd. After making friends with the elephant cow Kariba and their aunt Lilak, the zoo had left the breeding bull Tamo to the other four.
