Limburg/Frankfurt. The city of Limburg has released a playground after probably targeted damage to several trees with chemicals. After careful examination of all risks, the blocking of the playground on the corner of Moselstaße and Hontheide had been lifted again, the city said. The most damaged hornbeam was felled to protect visitors to the playground and the floor in the affected area was exchanged, it said. The police were also filed. Two other trees would currently be stabilized by intensive water to maintain them. The massive damage to the trees was said to have been found in the case of a routine check by a tree expert in the city. The city assumes a targeted contamination of the soil with a chemical substance. Laboratory tests of soil samples by the agricultural investigation and research institution in the Rhineland-Palatinate Speyer spoke for the introduction of a strongly alkaline-looking substance. It may be sodium hydroxide caution or residues from cleaning agents. She also asked for possible witnesses for help. Anyone who has made observations or can provide information about the possible cause or suspicious activities on the playground should become the Limburg-Weilburg police department. There was a similar case in Frankfurt recently: According to the city, two plane trees on Merianplatz were deliberately poisoned with glyphosate. The felling of the two trees for security reasons is planned for this Wednesday. (dpa)
