If a former foreign minister of the Federal Republic of Germany becomes chairman of the supervisory board of two steel companies, that might arouse some people’s interest. In Saarland, the fact that Heiko Maas was taking over supervision of Saarstahl and Dillinger Hütte was not even worth news to those involved. Without making too many waves in German waters, the fifty-nine-year-old began his new task on the Saar at the beginning of September. The companies only confirmed the change when asked: Maas, they say, should consistently continue on the path to the green future and “set the course for a sustainable industrial future of the region”. Maas succeeds Reinhard Störmer, the grand old mastermind, who is retiring after 35 years in various parts of the Saarland steel industry.
