General Motors is banning Apple CarPlay from all models, angering 79 percent of its customers. The conflict seems to be directed against Silicon Valley, but the real enemy is in China: While the West is arguing about phone mirroring, BYD, Nio and Xpeng have long since turned the car into a software platform. When Mary Barra confirmed a few days ago that General Motors would no longer use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in all of its vehicles, the CEO sent a signal that went far beyond a technical decision. By 2028, GM will introduce a new, unified platform. Then buyers of a Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet or GMC can still connect their phone – but can no longer project its surface onto the screen.
