Right now, switching to an electric vehicle (EV) seems like a step toward a greener future, with more options and better technology now driving the Indian market than ever before. But how do you decide what the most suitable EV according to your lifestyle, design choices and, most importantly, budget? Whether the goal is to save fuel or simply picking an EV that caters to your needs and wants, it is important to carry out your due diligence before making your mind.
Starting with the basics—daily commute distance, frequency of outstation trips, and driving environment—most urban drivers clock under 100 km a day, which nearly all EVs can handle without breaking a sweat. However, if weekend road trips or inter-city travel are common, look for models with a certified range of at least 400 km per charge. And don’t forget the reality check—actual range is often 15–25 per cent less than brochure claims due to Indian traffic and weather. As Akash Gupta, CEO of Zypp Electric, explains, “With AC and traffic, a 400 km car will give 320–340 km. Always test drive and ensure battery per cent drop per km.”
Another major factor to consider is the ability to fast charge, especially if you love spontaneous road trips. While charging stations are consistently growing in number in the metro cities, it is the national highways and smaller towns that one should look out for. It’s better to leave home with full battery. Rajat Mahajan, automotive sector leader, Deloitte India, says, “About 70 per cent plan to charge at home, yet only 44 per cent have dedicated setups.”
Modern EVs come loaded with features that cater to both practicality and comfort. Airbags, ABS, regenerative braking, advanced connectivity (like navigation to find charging stations), and smart apps are increasingly standard across segments. Boot space, ground clearance, and plush interiors appeal to families and comfort seekers. For delivery riders, pick two-wheelers with tough suspensions, service networks, and swappable batteries. Connectivity apps are making it easier than ever to find nearby charging stations and plan your trips.
Kaustabh Dhonde, the founder and CEO of AutoNxt, says, “EVs generally have a higher upfront cost but deliver savings over time through lower running expenses. Electricity costs per km are significantly less compared to petrol or diesel. Maintenance expenses are also reduced since EVs have fewer moving parts, eliminating frequent oil changes and reducing wear-and-tear on brakes due to regenerative systems.”
As the name suggests, an EV operates entirely on stored electricity and so the battery automatically becomes the most valuable part of your vehicle. Akash Gupta adds, “Four-wheelers nowadays generally come with a guarantee of 8 years, where two-wheelers come with 3-5 years. However, replacement costs can go up to Rs 3-5 Lakh and Rs 50,000 to 80,000, respectively. Hence, guarantee cover is crucial.”
Shreyas Kudalkar, owner of a BMW IX XDrive 50, notes that he did keep all these factors in mind, but still there was something that took him by surprise. Maintenance. He says, “Maintenance has been one of the most pleasant surprises. Compared to petrol or diesel cars, the upkeep is minimal and the routine service is typically quick and transparent.”
Buying an EV is ultimately about balancing range, charging options, features, and budget with genuine day-to-day needs. Test drives, honest comparisons, and a little homework will ensure you to pick a model that truly fits your lifestyle.
