In the parking lot of the inconspicuous low-rise building near Stanford University, the cedars and plane trees rustle in the wind. Computers are humming inside; Volkswagen developers are working with their American partner Rivian on software for the next generation of vehicles. Everything about this place in the American city of Palo Alto exudes a Silicon Valley atmosphere – even the building tells its own story: In the 1950s, according to local folklore, a young electronics company moved in here and deliberately had the building built simply in case its own business plans failed and the community had to take over the company headquarters and convert it into a school: a plan B was part of the founder’s everyday life back then.
