When Volkswagen opened its “Gläserne Manufaktur” in Dresden almost a quarter of a century ago, the ceremony had an almost sacred character. The Staatskapelle played, the Kreuzchor sang. Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) personally inaugurated the location, and company patriarch Ferdinand Piëch ceremoniously announced the name of the luxury car that was to roll off the assembly line there from then on: Phaeton. Today there is not much left of the former glory. Instead, the factory becomes a symbol of how difficult VW is having the conversion.
