Relax in the ice hockey arena

Even many passionate football fans admit that an ice hockey game is unbeatable as a live experience. On the one hand because of the pace, the action and the thrill that is inherent in this rousing sport. On the other hand, because the audience is so close that you can almost (but only almost) smell the cracks sweating in their equipment. This is especially true in the old and charming ice rink on Frankfurter Ratsweg (entry after 2-G-Plus), the home of the Frankfurt Lions. From all plastic seats – if not too close to the Plexiglas border of the ice surface – you have the best view.

Of course, the utilization of the hall is enormously reduced during these times, but the mood still arises. Especially since the ice hockey crowd is extremely relaxed. As a matter of course, fans of home and guests mingle during the third break and talk shop together in the queue at the beer and bratwurst stand. And there is no break at the end of the year in ice hockey: The next two home games of the Lions are on Boxing Day and December 30th. You can also get decent food at fair prices. For a portion of chili con carne as well as a meatball and a bratwurst in a roll you pay around a third of the price that would have been due in the football arena at Frankfurt Eintracht.

Winter walk in the Opel Zoo

The free animal show is over. The “Philosophenweg”, which leads through the middle of the Kronberg Opel Zoo, is no longer public, but zoo area, after decades of conflict. Admission (9 a.m. to 5 p.m., 2-G rule) is of course worthwhile, because the 27 hectare hilly area is a real gem.

It is like a little test of courage to enter the petting zoo on days with fewer visitors. Then goats and sheep have even more appetite – and they know how to increase their share of the bag contents in a rowdy way. A visit to Hesse’s only elephant is almost a must, as is the three newcomers to the pretty giraffe house.

Skiing in the Vogelsberg

Snow is usually a rare commodity in the Hessian low mountain ranges. But it often holds up surprisingly well on the Hoherodskopf in Vogelsberg. The trails are always very well maintained, so it is a pleasure to get your cross-country skis out of the cellar and drive to Schotten. Good equipment can also be borrowed from the Taufsteinhütte cross-country skiing center (from 18 euros for skis, boots and sticks), which is located right at an entry point. Almost 50 kilometers of trails are available if there is enough snow. And once you have disappeared into the winter forest, raving about the wonderful nature, then the threshold to the meditative is quickly reached, and the thin slats on your feet become boards that mean the world.

Black light mini golf

Mini golf indoors and with 3D glasses on your nose? Sounds like high treason on this popular and ridiculed game, which is often categorized between narrow-mindedness and retro muff. The miniature golf world can be seen in a special light on the course of the black light heroes (2G and mask compulsory) on the upper Berger Straße in Frankfurt-Bornheim. A world that begins behind a curtain and which actually only reminds you of this game because you carry a bat and ball with you. Without 3D glasses it’s fascinating, with 3D glasses it’s spectacular. The balls, obstacles and holes seem to float and you can literally look deep into the 500 square meters of graffiti art.

The brightly colored superhero depictions then draw attention to the fact that when you play for the first time, you don’t act like a mini golf superhero. Some things on these fairways turn out to be illusions or optical illusions; some railways even require a short instruction manual. And sometimes even the eyes need a breather – some 3D glasses are temporarily pushed into the forehead. The level of difficulty of the tracks ranges from easy to extremely tricky. A highlight is the ball course that starts on the ground floor and continues in the basement (the ball is definitely faster downstairs than the player). The black light heroes operate another facility in Mainz.
