Minister of Transport relies on car industry No diesel fund, no technical retrofitting
BMW
If the new Federal Cabinet in Meseberg in Brandenburg continues its meeting today, decisions should be made in the end as well, including the tiresome question of the nitrogen oxide pollution caused by diesel cars in German cities. Apparently the decision has already been made here, at least if you believe Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer.
The CSU man considers technical retrofitting of diesel cars the wrong way. “Reports on a diesel fund for hardware upgrades have caused irritation, but I assure you: There is nothing to it,” said Scheuer the “Passauer Neue Presse” (Wednesday edition). To the newspapers of the editorial network Germany (RND) he said: “Such a program does not exist.”
The Minister of Transport expressed confidence in being able to solve the problems anyway and without driving bans. “We at the Federal Ministry of Transport have legal and technical reservations about the retrofitting of emission control systems in older vehicles,” said Scheuer. He wants to achieve compliance with the limits without hardware retrofits.
The mirror” had previously reported, in the federal government there are considerations about a billion-dollar fund with involvement of the auto industry for the technical retrofitting of diesel vehicles. At least part of the diesel fleet could be retrofitted. To this end, the coalition is examining whether auto companies pay five billion euros in a fund. The government would send in money.
Among other environmental organizations have long been calling for so-called hardware retrofits in diesel cars – ie modifications to the engine or exhaust system. The manufacturers reject this, because such hardware retrofits are too expensive and expensive. They rely on software updates to reduce emissions.
It is considered certain that only technical retrofitting the Effectively and sufficiently reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides,
S & D Group vice mayor Sören Bartol warned already: “The industry must decide: Either the diesel drives in driving bans completely against the wall, or he still has a chance as a bridge technology.” Sole software updates were certainly not enough, says Bartol. “The technical retrofitting of Euro 5 and Euro 6 diesel vehicles has to come in. Of course, the costs must not get stuck with the drivers.”
How the federal government wants to prevent driving restrictions for diesel cars in other cities, is unclear. Independent courts are unlikely to be impressed by the Government’s indulgence in the matter.
Car buyers leave diesel vehicles more often left – too many seems in the face of the exhaust scandal, the risk of driving bans in large cities. In the process, a new generation of auto-igniters is finally filtering out nitrogen oxides effectively from the exhaust gases. We show the first cars with this standard Euro 6d-temp, which are allowed to emit 168 milligrams of NOX per kilometer in real traffic.

BMW also had problems with nitrogen oxide emissions under real driving conditions.
BMW X1 sDrive18d / xDrive18d / xDrive20d
Market launch: March 2018
A double exhaust gas purification from storage catalytic converter and SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue should have solved the problems.

Market launch: March 2018
For a long time, BMW was considered clean, but the picture has recently got more cracks – also because of a raid on the car manufacturer.

Practically all manufacturers – whether from Asia, Europe or the USA – had to supplement their vehicles with exhaust gas purification technology.

Market launch: March 2018
Mini also responded to the fact that normal Euro-6 diesel in reality usually emitted much more nitrogen oxides than allowed on the test bench.

Market launch: March 2018
According to the Federal Environment Agency they came on the road on average 507 milligrams NOX per kilometer. New Euro6d temp diesel come only on a fraction.

Mercedes responded very early – and even a praise from the archenemy, the German environmental aid, caught up.

Market launch: October 2018
Peugeot had previously measured and communicated the realistic consumption of its cars with environmental organizations.

In the medium term, however, conventional diesel cars are likely to have problems with the CO2 limits.

These do not apply to individual cars, but entire fleets.
Volvo S90 D3 / D4 / D5
Market launch: March 2017
Therefore, driving bans are unrealistic due to high CO2 emissions – especially since the greenhouse gas is not directly harmful to health.

Market launch: November 2017
Hybrid and electric cars will therefore continue to play an increasing role – even if manufacturers have extended the lifetime of diesel with the new emission standard.
According to experts, drivers of cars with the new Euro 6d-temp emission standard are safe from driving restrictions until further notice. In the first tests, some models even performed far better than the limits allow. Extensive results are expected in the coming weeks.
Scheuer seems like his predecessor to spare the car industry and to trust in their propagated software solutions. Opportun seems to Scheuer at the same time announce the exchange of diesel buses for more environmentally friendly vehicles and unisono a rich promotion of up to 80 percent. At least that’s what the federal government is planning.
Tax money would be made available for that, but motorists and the car industry would be spared. However, that would not really be effective: Public transport busses in cities are responsible for the much smaller proportion of nitrogen oxide emissions, so Scheuer concealed it wisely.
