German FAZ: armaments for 305 million to Kiev003562

Germany has so far approved the export of armaments to Ukraine in the amount of 305 million euros. This emerges from a response from the Federal Ministry of Economics to a request from the left-wing MP in the Bundestag Sevim Dagdelen. The total refers to the period from the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine on February 24 to June 1. War weapons accounted for 219 million euros, and “other armaments” for 85 million. In addition, a simplified approval procedure for deliveries of Bundeswehr material to other countries (collective export approvals), which came into force on April 1, was used. It was about a volume of 45 million euros. Dagdelen, who is the chairwoman of the Left Party on the Foreign Affairs Committee, said: “Instead of arming Kyiv to prolong the war and nurturing the illusion of a victorious peace over Russia, concrete diplomatic initiatives for a negotiated solution with security guarantees for all sides are required.” Spokesman for the Union faction, Jürgen Hardt, called on the federal government to quickly inform the factions about exports once the Federal Security Council has approved them.

The federal government did not comment on Monday whether Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) would travel to Kyiv with French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi on Thursday. Former Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said in Berlin that the misjudgment of Russia’s intentions was the biggest failure of German foreign policy since the beginning of the Federal Republic. It is a complete failure, which he perceives as a “personal burden”. For far too long, German politicians have believed in the willingness to reform and bring about change through economic relations. Decades of success would have made “most of us” arrogant and oblivious to warnings from Eastern Europe and America. Gabriel spoke at the transatlantic annual meeting of the Atlantic Bridge and the American Council on Germany.
