Ford Adds 550 Jobs In Kentucky Truck Plant To Boost SUV Production

If you’re in the market for a full-size SUV with truck underpinnings and convenience for the whole family, it’s hard to go wrong with the Expedition. Redesigned for the 2018 model year, Ford can’t keep up with demand for the successor of the fifth-generation Bronco.
26 photosWhat does an automaker do when people want a product but don’t like to wait for their order to roll off the assembly line? Invest in the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, of course! Adding 550 new jobs is just the tip of the iceberg, more so if you remember the Lincoln Navigator is also selling like hot cakes.
Through those 550 jobs, Ford plans to ramp up production by 20 percent. Expedition sales increased 35 percent in 2018 while the Navigator improved 70 percent. There’s also the matter of average transaction price, which grew by $11,700 to $62,700 last year.
Supporting these efforts, Ford is launching a new marketing campaign this week. “Better Big” focuses on the best-in-class towing and legroom of the Expedition, as well as the most driver-assist technology in the segment. “We ‘out-big’ the competition where it counts – towing, interior space and technology,” declared Matt VanDyke, director of U.S. marketing. “Our team completely rethought every inch of Expedition, and its growing sales reaffirm we hit the sweet spot with today’s full-size SUV customers.”
In addition to more workforce, the Kentucky Truck Plant has increased the line speed by cutting down the cycle times of each operation. How did Ford pull it off? By adding more workstations and splitting up tasks to ensure the employees can finish their jobs in the allotted time, thank you!
Production per se will increase after the summer shutdown in July 2019, and if you were wondering, the Expedition can seat eight people and tow up to 9,300 pounds. For first-time homeowners who are starting new families, that’s an offer few can refuse. Does it come as a surprise Ford is discontinuing most passenger cars in the U.S. lineup to focus on trucks and utilities? Not even slightly!

Magna Steyr Starts Production Of 2020 Toyota GR Supra

25 Mar 2019, 12:27 UTC ·
by Mircea Panait

Home > News > Car Profile

Ah, outsourcing! If you were wondering, even Toyota is doing it because of the cost. After all, it’s cheaper to use the tooling and workforce of another company. And thus, the GR Supra is now manufactured in Graz, Austria instead of Motomachi, Japan.
71 photosThis turn of events shouldn’t come as a surprise considering the Supra is related to the Z4, and BMW has a long-running production partnership with Magna Steyr. On the other hand, we can’t imagine that the Austrians have the same quality assurance as Toyota in Japan. Adding insult to injury, the BMW parts utilized by the Supra aren’t the latest word in terms of reliability.
The question is, does reliability matter that much in a sports car? To each his own, but Mazda is a positive example in this regard with the MX-5 Miata. Even though the Supra is available with a 2.0-liter turbo in Europe, the German configurator takes reservations for configurations that start at €62,900.
Over in the United States, the Launch Edition retails at $55,250 and the Supra comes exclusively with the BMW-sourced turbo inline-six engine. Lower down the range, the 3.0 Premium is $53,990 while the 3.0 without Premium starts at $49,990 before destination charge.
Taking the Z4 sDrive30i for reference, the BMW starts at $49,700 with the 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-four engine. Looking at the bigger picture, both models are expensive from the get-go and both will be produced in limited numbers as a consequence.
Then again, sports cars aren’t selling too well these days. Crossovers and SUVs are at the forefront of demand, and every automaker in the industry is pouring resources into developing crossovers and SUVs as quickly as possible. It’s a matter of supply and demand, and there’s no reason to point the fingers at automakers for these circumstances.
As for the first-ever Supra to roll off the assembly line in Graz, Magna Steyr finished the car in phantom matte grey. The VIN is also special, including 20201 where 2020 marks the model year and 1 indicates the first example of the breed. If you were wondering , VIN 001 has been auctioned by Barrett-Jackson for $2.1 million, and all of the proceeds are going to the Bob Woodruff Foundation and American Heart Association.

ASI Technologies Focuses on the future as ASI Drives, and New AGV Pallet Robot, FRED2500

New name and new product with the same focus on world-class gear drive solutions

MONTGOMERYVILLE, PA, USA, 2-Apr-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — ASI Drives, a leading manufacturer of custom engineered gear drives since 1985, has announced a major rebranding, the enhancement of towing functionality with its breakout FRED2500 AGV, and an upcoming opportunity to meet FRED in person.

After nearly 35 years, ASI Technologies recently rebranded itself as ASI Drives. The change captures the company’s focus on delivering world-class gear drive solutions to its target markets and providing superior product value for customers.

ASI does not simply design and manufacture battery-powered gear drives for machines up to one ton; ASI Drives solutions, value, and gear technology.

“ASI has developed an industry-leading ability to solve problems and offer value to our customers,” said Doug Fastuca, CEO. “We continue to innovate our gear and motor technologies with AGMA Standards, and with the introduction of our FRED AGV, we’re driving new areas of performance and automation.”

The change further establishes ASI within the AGV and warehouse automation markets, as does the introduction of FRED, ASI’s innovative, self-driving, material-handling vehicle.

FRED is not your typical AGV. It’s simple to set up, productive, flexible, safe, and affordable. And with the addition of new towing capabilities, there are a multiple methods and opportunities to move material around your facility. Using empty dollies, a detachable handle, and a quick-release tongue, FRED can easily move between multiple pickup locations with ease.

If you plan to be in Chicago for ProMat 2019, we hope you’ll stop by to meet FRED2500. You can find it and the rest of the team from ASI Drives in booth #S1061 at McCormick Place.

Streamlining adoption of high-speed and high-resolution surface texturing delivered with the Prometheus project

Streamlining adoption of high-speed and high-resolution surface texturing delivered with the Prometheus project

This three-year program brings together leading research and industrial organizations to allow the broad manufacturing of materials with low-friction, oleophobic and hydrophobic properties

PORTO SALVO, 4-Apr-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Prometheus’ project will bridge the existing gap between niche and mainstream applications for high power ultra-short pulse laser surface processing. This advanced technology enables the production of materials with advanced properties such as non-stick, low wear/friction, oleophobic or hydrophobic, but through this unique project will deliver a broad range of surface functionalities onto metals, polymers and ceramics by way of high throughput, high spatial resolution Direct Laser Interference Patterning (DLIP) surface processing. It is expected to deliver unprecedented surface texturing speeds of up to 5 m2/min and enable high resolution features down to 1 μm to be produced with minimal heat impact on work pieces. This ambitious project represents a pan-European EU consortium of world leading organizations, from industrial and research partners to four manufacturers – Maier, Johnson and Johnson, Fiat Chrysler Automobile group and Arcelik – that will be able to assess the project’s outputs against current industrial processes. Wrapping up the thee-year project, and through breakthrough developments in laser sources, optics, process setup, control and monitoring, the consortium will deliver an integrated laser processing demonstrator system to showcase its capabilities according to the established goals.

Beyond the expected improvement on accuracy, the Prometheus project qualitative objectives include better resources utilization from raw materials to energy and waste. It is also expected a quantum leap on the speed of materials’ processing, as mentioned, by reaching 2-5 m2/min, while also minimizing heat impact on sensitive materials. The project aims to achieve improved flexibility and allow for a simpler product customization – all of this at a fraction of existing solutions’ cost. The case studies being developed include a dishwasher, a tumble dryer, a cylinder piston liner, and high strength aluminium pressing for automotive.

The unique ability of this technology to deliver precise periodic arrays of surface features at an unprecedented processing rate will contribute to its entrance into mainstream manufacturing processes, from its current usage in niche ultra-high value applications. The DLIP (Direct Laser Interference Patterning) technology enables the full utilisation of the high-power laser systems delivering profound productivity gains versus current technologies. Also, by being digital by default, the system enables rapid reconfiguration to deliver customised surface functionalities and patterns on a component by component basis.

Keeping Europe at the core of innovation and environmental leadership

This unique project will bring to light a high potential high power ultra-short pulse laser processing system. Prometheus will address some of the key European 2020 societal challenges, both by ensuring that European companies and research organizations stay at the leading edge of the new
manufacturing technologies and by creating new jobs opportunities. At the same time, the project will minimize environmental impacts.

Prometheus will also contribute to support the goal of increasing investment in innovation up to 3% of the EU’s GDP. The new approaches to surface engineering made possible by this technology will have an impact on the increase in R&D spending, both in photonic component development
necessary to control the increased power densities and in widespread application development.

The exceptionally high processing rate enables cost-effective processing to price-sensitive industrial sectors such as the consortium partners, spanning automotive, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), white goods and consumer durables. The effect will also be felt on the overall value chain,
given the expected technology transfer and training across manufacturing sectors, as it becomes mainstream.

The SEC in February sought to have Musk found in contempt of a fraud settlement last year after the CEO tweeted details about Tesla production numbers that were not vetted by the electric vehicle company's attorneys.
Instead, U.S. District Court Judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan ordered Musk and the SEC to try to resolve the dispute on their own. The parties have already requested one extension.
The SEC sued Musk last year for making fraudulent statements after he tweeted on Aug. 7 that he had “funding secured” to take Tesla private at $420 per share. The parties later settled and Musk agreed to step down as chairman and have the company's lawyers pre-approve written communications, including tweets with material information about the company. Musk's lawyers have argued that the February tweet did not contain new information that was material to investors.

Ford C-Max, Grand C-Max Will End Production In June 2019

So long, multi-purpose vehicles! Even in Europe, crossovers and sport utility vehicles are all the rage, and something had to give as far as Ford is concerned. To the point, C-Max and Grand C-Max are going out of production in Saarlouis towards the end of June 2019.
15 photos“These actions represent an important step towards delivering the products our customers want and a more competitive business for our stakeholders,” declared Steven Armstrong, chairman of the supervisory board. On the upside, Saarlouis will continue production of the Focus hatchback and wagon.
Speaking of which, the Kuga is up for a redesign, and the compact crossover shares the C2 vehicle architecture with the Focus. Over in the North America, the 2020 Ford Escape will be the first nameplate from the Blue Oval to feature the C2 in this part of the world. Both models are going official on April 2nd at the Go Further event in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Canceling the compact-sized minivans in June 2019 means that Ford will cancel the night shift. Moving to a two-shift schedule sounds counterintuitive, but the restructuring plan in Europe boils down to “reduced structural costs and increased efficiencies.”

Ford-Werke GmbH oversees the Saarlouis plant, and the workers were informed back in December 2018 that C-Max and Grand C-Max are not long for this world. Care to guess how bad the two nameplates fare in terms of sales?
53,937 is the number of total sales in Europe last year, down from 68,019 in 2017 and the historic high of 165,537 in 2004. There’s no sugarcoating this failure, not when crossovers and SUVs are selling this well on a worldwide basis. The truth of the matter is, MPVs aren’t in with the “in” crowd.
Over in Germany, the C-Max starts at €17,900 from the get-go or €14,590 as part of a special offer. The Karosserien Grand option adds €1,200 to the price. At the upper end of the spectrum, the Titanium trim level of the Grand C-Max costs €26,100 and €21,490, respectively.
